DoggyLove packs plant-based dog treats in Sonoco’s GREENCAN®

Sonoco’s recyclable paper-based cans are a perfect fit with the company’s commitment to natural, organic produce and sustainability

Hockenheim, Germany – Pet snack manufacturing start-up, DoggyLove, based in Germany, has partnered with Sonoco and the paper-based GREENCAN® solution to bring its organic, plant-based pet treats to market.

Originally founded in 1956 as a butcher’s shop, and then later a catering business, this family-run firm recently decided to take things in a totally different direction, re-inventing itself as a pet food manufacturer. Following extensive consultations with veterinarians throughout 2023, DoggyLove began trading in 2024 – and finding the perfect packaging partner, with whom to launch its new range of products, was key.

“Our new business is personal to us, inspired by own dog, a labrador called Peggy, who was part of our lives for 15 years,” says Christoph Wirth, who owns and runs the business with his wife, Konstanze. “Peggy was the inspiration for DoggyLove and our core mission now is to develop healthy snacks to promote the health and well-being of all dogs.”

“We thought long and hard about what the right packaging was to present this product to market,” Mr Wirth continues. “To reflect the values of our brand, it was very important to us that it was both high quality and sustainable. Initially we wanted to use different packaging types from Asia for our products, but we quickly realised that it would entail the long delivery times and an increase in global political uncertainty for us. This has led us to decide in favour of a locally manufactured solution, which was also a perfect match with our values: GREENCAN®, the paper-based can from Sonoco.”

He adds: “GREENCAN® was unlike anything we saw from any other packaging provider, and it appealed to us on multiple levels because of the short delivery times, and because of its sustainability credentials, which are not only ethically important to us, but are also very important to our customers, giving us another angle to talk about in our marketing. Finally, the creative possibilities of being able to employ full-surface printing on the packaging, was also really appealing.”

“As a new brand, the way in which we’re perceived is important to us, and Sonoco’s GREENCAN® solution helps to reinforce our holistic brand image of responsible and sustainable production. We see this as just the beginning of our partnership and we’re already planning other potential products that would also be a perfect fit with this packaging.”

DoggyLove’s customers have also been impressed with the packaging – with early customer feedback describing it as “high quality”.

On the experience of working with Sonoco, Mr Wirth says: “We’ve always found our collaboration with Sonoco to be very pleasant and constructive. As a start-up, it was important for us to find the right partner to help bring our products to market and Sonoco has been very supportive during the whole product launch process. The service we’ve received has always been friendly, and both solution- and goal-orientated, with all of our questions dealt with quickly and comprehensively.”

Sascha Di Nardi, Sales Manager at Sonoco Germany, comments: “It’s been a pleasure working with Mr Wirth and the team to bring DoggyLove products to the market. We’re delighted to have found a suitable sustainable alternative in GREENCAN® for their packaging and are pleased to hear that they have had a positive response from their customers too. We look forward to continuing our partnership with DoggyLove in the future.”

Webinar: Sort It! Helping the public adapt to the UK’s future recycling regime

We’ve invited stakeholders from across the UK’s local government,  packaging, and waste and resource management sectors to discuss and encourage positive public behaviour change ahead of the forthcoming changes to the UK’s waste and recycling policy.

    Webinar overview

The success of DRS (deposit return scheme) and consistent collections, due to be introduced in the next few years, will be reliant on the public changing their behaviours and adapting to a more rigorous and complicated waste and recycling system.

Together with key stakeholders from across the UK’s local government, packaging, and waste and resource management sectors, we explored the following questions:

    • What role does each stakeholder play in ensuring that the public understands what they need to do to adapt to the new initiatives?
    • What do the packaging, waste, and government sectors need to do to encourage public behaviour change to ensure that the DRS and consistent collections policies are a success?
    • Is there enough time to launch a public education programme before the DRS and consistent collections policies are introduced? What should that public education programme look like?
    • What lessons can we learn from other countries who have successfully introduced DRS and consistent collections policies?

There is a significant challenge facing local authorities in particular to ensure that the public fully understands the new system and complies by the new requirements.

We were delighted to be joined by an expert panel to talk about what is required, including:

    • Michelle Whitfield – Head of Communications & Behavioural Change, Waste & Resources Team, Greater Manchester Combined Authority
    • Paul Vanston – CEO, The Industry Council for Packaging & the Environment (INCPEN)
    • Jacob Hayler – Executive Director, The Environmental Services Association (ESA)
    • Scott Byrne – Assistant Director, Global Sustainability, Sonoco

Download our whitepaper on EPR and beyond

Producers have a huge responsibility to adopt and maintain sustainable practices.

This is a responsibility Sonoco takes extremely seriously. Any legislation in this area though, needs to take a holistic view of what it means to be a responsible producer, rather than a narrow focus on material types.

It also needs to be wary of unintended consequences and must recognise that truly sustainable long-term solutions to our waste and recycling challenges require collaboration across the supply chain, from producers to brand owners and retailers, to consumers and trade bodies, and to Government and local authorities. By singling out producers alone, the EPR legislation risks missing an opportunity to improve waste disposal and recycling practices more broadly.

In this whitepaper, Sonoco looks at what it really means to be a responsible producer and examines ways in which the UK could improve its packaging recycling rates that go far beyond the scope of the EPR consultation.

  • IOSH Safety Training

    IOSH Safety Training

Here at Sonoco, we stand by the belief that safety isn’t expensive, it’s priceless!

We caught up with Mark Wadsworth, European Health and Safety Director at Sonoco Consumer Products Europe, to discuss the recent completion of the IOSH Safety qualification at our UK plants, ensuring our people have the most up-to-date knowledge at their fingertips to keep themselves and others safe.

What is the training about and why do our employees complete it?
The training gives people a better understanding about both the company’s and their own responsibilities when it comes to safety.

It also shows people that safety forms part of their everyday lives by using non-work-based scenarios to showcase that each and every day they are identifying hazards and carrying out mini- risk assessments in their mind, even if they didn’t realise this before. Also, our employees gain a certified IOSH qualification following successful completion of the training.
This approach then breaks the stigma about safety being the job of the site safety person and makes all attendees further realise that, safety is everyone’s job.

In our Bradford plant the training has been pushed by the plant as a means to improve safety within the workplace and our safety performance within the plant has improved significantly since we began on this journey.
At our Chesterfield plant the training is voluntary and those who are choosing to attend are wanting to improve their knowledge with regards to safety and gain a qualification, as well as participating in a group training session with their colleagues from different departments who they may not ordinarily work with.

What does it mean to those involved?
All the feedback we have received for the training has been unanimously positive, with almost all attendees advising that they would recommend this training to their friends and colleagues. The training has now been delivered internally to over 100 employees across both of our sites, with future sessions planned later this month and beyond.

People who have attended the training are grateful to have something to show for the training and have then become more forthcoming with suggestions for safety improvements leading to a continual improvement within our plants, as we can always be better than we are.

How would this support raising safety awareness across the company?
Following the rollout of this training to 80% of our operational staff in our Bradford plant, we have seen a dramatic reduction in workplace accidents, with the plant having recently achieved the incredible milestone of 4 years without a recordable accident.

We have also seen a significant increase in near-miss and hazard reporting in the plant and continued suggestions for safety improvements from those at the sharp end of our manufacturing process who make the excellent products we sell.

As well as the IOSH Working Safely training we offer internally, we also offer IOSH Managing Safely and we have trained out our inaugural course in September this year and are looking to conduct further sessions and train out our plant leadership teams in both our Bradford and Chesterfield plants early in 2022.

This more in-depth training will then also be offered to our line leaders who wish to develop further within the business, so that they better understand that with a leadership position at any level there are additional responsibilities where safety is concerned.

Is there anything additional you’d like to say?
It is great to work for a company that is willing to invest so heavily in training their employees. Sonoco care about and are investors in their people and this training is proof of this.

It has been a pleasure to train this course out to our excellent workforce with all employees who have attended, even those who may have been sceptical at first, being very engaged in the process and ultimately really enjoying the training and the experience of learning about safety.

Some people may believe that safety training being enjoyable is an oxymoron, but I would like to think that if you asked any one of the 90+ attendees we have trained so far, they would say that they enjoyed the training.

  • Premier Foods reduce gravy Bisto’s environmental impact by reducing the height of its Bisto paperboard drum

Premier Foods reduce gravy Bisto’s environmental impact by reducing the height of its Bisto paperboard drum

Sonoco’s fully recyclable paperboard packaging solution will help Premier Foods to remove 40 tonnes of packaging used for its best-selling Bisto gravy drum, as it aims to reduce its environmental footprint.

Premier Foods, one of Britain’s largest listed food companies, is continuing its work to reduce its environmental impact while helping its customers make more sustainable choices. The food manufacturer has introduced its new sized Bisto Gravy product, which will now come in caddies that are 8mm smaller than the previous edition. This will save 40 tonnes of paper annually at Premier Food’s Bisto manufacturing line in Worksop, Nottinghamshire.

Using recyclable paperboard drums produced by Sonoco, one of the largest global packaging companies, the new Bisto packaging gives shoppers an additional 20g of gravy granules (190g total) – approximately six more portions per tub – for the exact same price as before, while being presented in packaging that uses fewer resources.

Sonoco’s paperboard container is made from recycled paper fibre, including a paperboard end. All inks and adhesives are water-based, and all materials used in the packaging are easily separable within the recycling process. The UK requires at least 85% paperboard* to accept packaging in the paper waste stream, and the Bisto drums exceed that requirement as it is made of 95% paperboard, allowing shoppers to dispose of all empty Bisto caddies via UK-wide kerbside recycling collections.

Philip Brown, UK Sales Manager at Sonoco Consumer Products Europe says: “For Premier Foods, sustainable packaging solutions are essential, and they are also very aware of the need to reduce the amount of packaging that is being used for each product. Premier’s decision to reduce the height of the drum demonstrates its determination to give its customers a solution that uses less resources, while also giving them more of the products they love at the same great price, and with freshness and quality assured. We’re delighted that they have adopted our paperboard packaging solution to meet their sustainability goals.”

Premier Foods is in the process applying the new height to all its gravy drums, which include Chicken, Onion, Turkey and Vegetable.

*The U.K. currently requires at least 85% paperboard to accept packaging in the paper waste stream, with a plan to increase to 90% required by 2023. This paper-based packaging format exceeds that requirement as it is made of 95% paperboard.

“Reducing the size of our drum is a great example of how small changes can ladder up to make a big difference. We make around 50 million Bisto gravy drums each year and so change of this scale requires real collaboration. We’re really pleased to have found a more sustainable solution while retaining the quality of Bisto that people love and expect.”
