Lorenz snaps up Sonoco’s paper-end can for its Crunchips Stackers

Lorenz snaps up Sonoco’s paper-end can for its Crunchips Stackers

Snack brand chooses Sonoco packaging to improve recyclability, promote circularity and support its sustainability goals.

Hockenheim, Germany – With the Crunchips Stackers, the popular Crunchips family from Lorenz Snack-World is growing – now in a rigid paper can with a paper bottom from Sonoco. The new packaging, which has been certified as 88% recyclable by Circular Analytics in Germany, has been available in Germany since May 2025 and represents a significant step in Lorenz’s efforts to introduce more sustainable primary packaging. The paper-based can has been designed to be easier to recycle while ensuring the quality and durability consumers expect.

Lorenz Snack-World is an independent family-owned company and, with around 3,000 employees, is one of the leading suppliers in the European snack market. Lorenz’s range includes potato chips, peanut puffs, pretzel sticks, crackers and nuts. As a family-owned company, Lorenz has always taken a long-term view and takes responsibility – for the high quality of its products, for sustainable management and for future-oriented development.

The specially developed paper-based snack can, designed for Crunchips Stackers, sets new standards in sustainability and recyclability for Lorenz. Unlike other conventional snack cans, it contains no aluminium foil in the innerliner and no metal base. Thanks to its innovative design, the paper-based can achieves an impressive 88% recyclability, as certified by Circular Analytics. A specially designed protective layer on the inside ensures the chips remain fresh and crispy, offering the same product protection without compromising on environmental performance. With the launch of Crunchips Stackers in this new packaging, the brand reinforces its commitment to more sustainable packaging solutions.

Julia Giesser, Senior Brand Manager at Lorenz, explains: “Crunchips Stackers is the ideal product to present our packaging innovations to a wide audience. With the launch of a recyclable paper-end can under this brand, we are reaffirming our commitment to sustainability while meeting consumer expectations for high-quality, tasty snacks.”

The snack can with a paper-end has been available in Germany since May 2025. Its development is the result of more than three years of close collaboration between the Lorenz and Sonoco engineering teams.” Our partnership with Sonoco was crucial in bringing this product to life,” adds Julia. “The technical expertise and comprehensive support throughout the development process have enabled us to translate our sustainability goals into a tangible solution.”

For Sonoco, the collaboration represents another milestone in the development of paper-based packaging innovations. Peter Görlitz, Sustainability Manager Sonoco Europe, says: “Lorenz’s decision to use our paper-end can for the Crunchips Stackers shows their clear commitment to responsible packaging. It’s a great example of how paper-based solutions can help brand owners make real progress on recyclability while supporting the circular economy.”

Lorenz continues to explore alternative materials as part of its “Reduce, Recycle, Replace” strategy. Julia comments: “We are working hard to reduce the use of materials overall and plastic in particular. We are constantly testing more environmentally friendly materials that ensure product protection and meet our high-quality standards. We are doing everything we can to increase the recyclability of our primary packaging. And since recyclable packaging must also be disposed of correctly, we are committed to educating consumers in Poland, Germany and Austria about recycling and motivating them to support the recycling process.”

The launch of the Crunchips Stackers continues to support Lorenz’s efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of its packaging portfolio and lead by example within the industry.

Peter says: “We are delighted to introduce the Crunchips Stackers in Sonoco’s paper-end can. Lorenz’s commitment to innovation and sustainability aligns perfectly with our own, and this project was a great opportunity to put our shared values into action. We are proud to have delivered a solution that meets their sustainability goals without compromising on quality and look forward to a continued successful partnership with Lorenz.”

“Crunchips Stackers is the ideal product to present our packaging innovations to a wide audience. With the launch of a recyclable paper-end can under this brand, we are reaffirming our commitment to sustainability while meeting consumer expectations for high-quality, tasty snacks.”

  • DoggyLove packs plant-based dog treats in Sonoco’s GREENCAN®

DoggyLove packs plant-based dog treats in Sonoco’s GREENCAN®

Sonoco’s recyclable paper-based cans are a perfect fit with the company’s commitment to natural, organic produce and sustainability

Hockenheim, Germany – Pet snack manufacturing start-up, DoggyLove, based in Germany, has partnered with Sonoco and the paper-based GREENCAN® solution to bring its organic, plant-based pet treats to market.

Originally founded in 1956 as a butcher’s shop, and then later a catering business, this family-run firm recently decided to take things in a totally different direction, re-inventing itself as a pet food manufacturer. Following extensive consultations with veterinarians throughout 2023, DoggyLove began trading in 2024 – and finding the perfect packaging partner, with whom to launch its new range of products, was key.

“Our new business is personal to us, inspired by own dog, a labrador called Peggy, who was part of our lives for 15 years,” says Christoph Wirth, who owns and runs the business with his wife, Konstanze. “Peggy was the inspiration for DoggyLove and our core mission now is to develop healthy snacks to promote the health and well-being of all dogs.”

“We thought long and hard about what the right packaging was to present this product to market,” Mr Wirth continues. “To reflect the values of our brand, it was very important to us that it was both high quality and sustainable. Initially we wanted to use different packaging types from Asia for our products, but we quickly realised that it would entail the long delivery times and an increase in global political uncertainty for us. This has led us to decide in favour of a locally manufactured solution, which was also a perfect match with our values: GREENCAN®, the paper-based can from Sonoco.”

He adds: “GREENCAN® was unlike anything we saw from any other packaging provider, and it appealed to us on multiple levels because of the short delivery times, and because of its sustainability credentials, which are not only ethically important to us, but are also very important to our customers, giving us another angle to talk about in our marketing. Finally, the creative possibilities of being able to employ full-surface printing on the packaging, was also really appealing.”

“As a new brand, the way in which we’re perceived is important to us, and Sonoco’s GREENCAN® solution helps to reinforce our holistic brand image of responsible and sustainable production. We see this as just the beginning of our partnership and we’re already planning other potential products that would also be a perfect fit with this packaging.”

DoggyLove’s customers have also been impressed with the packaging – with early customer feedback describing it as “high quality”.

On the experience of working with Sonoco, Mr Wirth says: “We’ve always found our collaboration with Sonoco to be very pleasant and constructive. As a start-up, it was important for us to find the right partner to help bring our products to market and Sonoco has been very supportive during the whole product launch process. The service we’ve received has always been friendly, and both solution- and goal-orientated, with all of our questions dealt with quickly and comprehensively.”

Sascha Di Nardi, Sales Manager at Sonoco Germany, comments: “It’s been a pleasure working with Mr Wirth and the team to bring DoggyLove products to the market. We’re delighted to have found a suitable sustainable alternative in GREENCAN® for their packaging and are pleased to hear that they have had a positive response from their customers too. We look forward to continuing our partnership with DoggyLove in the future.”

  • Sonoco Introduces latest Paper Packaging Innovation with Fully Recyclable 95% Paper-Based Cans

Sonoco Introduces latest Paper Packaging Innovation with Fully Recyclable 95% Paper-Based Cans

The 95% paper-based can, a significant addition to the EnviroSense® portfolio.

Hockenheim, Germany – Sonoco has always been dedicated to enhancing the paper content in its packaging to optimise its recyclability. Most recently, they have contributed to the introduction of recyclable paper cans for Nestlé coffee products.

The new can-body has an innovative recyclable 95% paper-based version. This more sustainable solution replaces the conventional metal bottom with a fibre-based bottom, making the entire can-body fully recyclable across households in the UK and mainland Europe.

Moreover, the recyclable paper can-body not only offers practical benefits such as lightweight design for easy handling and transportation, but it also plays a crucial role in protecting the product while having the same level of high barrier properties as the traditional metal-end can. This innovative packaging solution is making a positive contribution to reducing packaging waste, and also provides the same level of durability and functionality as its traditional packaging.

More importantly though, is the new packaging’s recyclability. The new paper-can meets the UK’s packaging regulations and is recyclable in existing systems across the UK.

Seàn Cairns, President Global RPC at Sonoco: “We are proud to have contributed to this latest innovation in the coffee market – a new recyclable paper-end can with medium to high barrier properties. This solution reflects an important step towards more sustainable packaging.”

Sonoco has proudly introduced the 95% paper can, a significant addition to the EnviroSense® portfolio. This innovative packaging solution is designed with sustainability at its core, utilising 95% paper content to meet the growing demand for eco-friendly alternatives. Sonoco’s Paper Bottom Can range reflects our commitment to reducing environmental impact by offering packaging that is not only highly recyclable but also minimises the use of plastic. By integrating more paper into our cans, we are taking a substantial step toward supporting our customers’ sustainability goals and contributing to a more sustainable future.

“We hope that the success of this project will inspire other companies and brands to embrace more sustainable packaging solutions.”

Marigold to Launch in Sonoco’s Fully Recyclable Paper Container with Paper-Base

Marigold Health Foods switches to Sonoco’s Paper Can for its natural and organic food products

Marigold Health Foods, a natural and organic food brand, is now enhancing its commitment to sustainability by switching to Sonoco’s paper-based can, fully recyclable packaging

Marigold Health Foods, in collaboration with Sonoco, is proud to announce the launch of its new, fully recyclable packaging for a variety of natural, plant-based food products. Marigold’s range includes nutritional yeast known as Engevita, bouillon, gravy, stock cubes, sauces, and plant-based meat and fish alternatives. Marigold emphasises use of high-quality ingredients free from artificial additives and palm oil, catering to health-conscious consumers who value sustainability and ethical production. The fully recyclable packaging solution, created by Sonoco, exemplifies Marigold’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, setting a new standard in the market.

Sonoco’s Paper Container designed with a paper bottom, can be easily recycled by consumers. The user-friendly packaging ensures that after consumption; consumers can easily and fully recycle the packaging at their kerbsides. Whilst maintaining the original functionality to preserve and protect the food, the new packaging has the added benefit of improved recyclability.

The new packaging development, a process spanning two years, represents a significant advancement in recyclable packaging technology. The previous packaging, which featured a cardboard body with a metal base, presented recycling challenges. By investing in new machinery, Marigold has replaced the metal end with a paper-based alternative developed by Sonoco, resulting in a next-generation, all-paper body and base. This change not only enhances the packaging’s environmental footprint, it also meets the requirements for key UK and European packaging and recycling regulations

Marigold’s new packaging, made primarily from paperboard with secondary materials such as an aluminium seal and a plastic LDPE lid, integrates innovative technology in material design and production. Sonoco’s Paper Bottom Can, part of the new design, ensures food safety and optimal shelf-life performance by providing an oxygen and moisture barrier. With more than a 20% reduction in packaging weight, Marigold has been able to drastically decrease its transport fuel consumption. The packaging solution also boasts a lower environmental footprint than other rigid packaging types, while being produced from sustainably sourced, recyclable materials.

Marigold’s transition to a paper base aligns with its commitment to environmental stewardship. The can-body is made from 95% paper, and primarily sourced from recycled materials (60% post-consumer recycled fibre). The new packaging supports the circular economy and can be recycled in the UK’s paper waste stream. The remaining 5% of the packaging consists of an inner liner, which is essential for protecting the product. The new packaging is now available in most UK supermarkets – and it includes the latest OPRL recycling logo to help UK consumers recycle their packaging correctly.

This partnership reflects their shared vision of promoting a sustainable future and ensuring that consumers can enjoy Marigold products with a clear conscience.

Marigold has been shortlisted for the Grocer Gold Awards in the Composite Packaging category on the launch of the fully recyclable paper can with a paper-based design.

“We are thrilled to introduce this innovative, fully recyclable packaging solution in partnership with Sonoco. This development underscores our unwavering commitment to sustainability and our dedication to providing our customers with environmentally responsible packaging. By transitioning to this new packaging, we are taking a significant step towards reducing packaging material and lowering our carbon footprint, while continuing to deliver the high-quality products our customers expect.”

  • New Pringles Tube Now Available in Ireland

New Pringles Tube Now Available in Ireland

Kellanova Europe, in collaboration with Sonoco, is thrilled to announce the nationwide availability of the new recyclable Pringles tube.

A more eco-friendly Pringles tube has been launched to allow snackers to more easily pop the tube of their favourite crisps in with their household recycling. Now available nationwide, the paper-based tubes will replace the iconic Pringles can originally launched in the 1960s, which had a steel base.

The new tube is made from recycled paper and has a paper base, which means customers can put it straight in their home recycling bin. It has a plastic lid that can also be recycled. The paper-based tube has been rigorously tested by the company’s packaging experts to make sure it protects the iconic saddle-shaped crisps and keeps them fresh for 15 months, just like the original can.

The new paper-based tube was first introduced to retail outlets nationwide in August. This significant move, which has involved an investment of €100 million in new technology, follows the trial of a steel can in Italy in 2019 and a paper tube in the UK in 2020. The introduction of the more widely recyclable Pringles tube made from 90% paper is an important step towards Kellanova’s commitment to have all its packaging being recyclable, reusable and compostable by 2025.

Seàn Cairns, President – Global Rigid Paper and Closures (RPC) at Sonoco, worked with Pringles technical teams, to develop the new ‘designed for recycling’ tube. He notes that consumers are more aware than ever of how their purchasing behaviours are impacting the environment, as well as the more sustainable packaging options available to them.

“With this in mind,” he says, “it’s important for businesses to stay ahead of the curve by exploring new packaging technologies and materials.” Highlighting the importance of partnership in packaging design, he adds: “It was a pleasure working with Pringles and we look forward to seeing how the new paper-based tube is received by the market. We hope the success of this project inspires other companies and brands to convert to more sustainable packaging.”

“We know people want to reduce their impact to the planet and it’s our responsibility to improve the recyclability of our packaging. We’ve worked hard to develop and test a more recyclable Pringles paper-based tube and we made significant investment in new technology to enable our factories to produce it. Not only is it widely recyclable but it keeps the chips fresh and tasty and protects them from breaking which helps to reduce food waste.”

  • Cristalco icing sugar brand in France, Daddy Sugar launches in Sonoco’s recyclable paper container

Cristalco icing sugar brand in France, Daddy Sugar launches in Sonoco’s recyclable paper container

One of France’s most iconic household brands in France is making a more sustainable switch

The popular French sugar brand has replaced its previous plastic container with a Sonoco cardboard container fitted with a PP sprinkler, making the pack fully recyclable.

With a goal of reducing the carbon footprint of its packaging, Cristalco re-think the design of its 500g Daddy Sugar icing sugar sprinkler container. Previously consisting of a polyethylene (PEHD) body completely covered by an oriented polystyrene (OPS) sleeve and a polypropylene (PP) lid, it was an obvious candidate for an eco-revamp.

After five years of work, six technical studies and multiple life cycle analyses to define the best concept and material choices, the Cristalco is launching a new cardboard packaging from Sonoco that contains 80% less plastic.

Supplied by Sonoco, the new cardboard container, with 68% of recycled fibre comes with a PE film innerliner to preserve the contents and limit sugar caking by protecting it from humidity. The PP lid (produced by Rovip) has two openings, one with six small holes for sprinkling, while the other has a wider opening for pastry-making.

Julie Moréac, Head of Packaging Development and Technical Support at Cristalco said:

“We’ve improved the sprinkler so that the icing sugar pours out better. We wanted the lid to be as eco-designed as possible, while still retaining its core functionalities. It needed to offer easy dispensing, opening and closing, and a tamper-evident seal. The lid, meanwhile, had to retain its shape and not “ovalise” despite us reducing the amount of material use to form it. These posed significant challenges to overcome. In addition, the lid is held in the can, without glue, to prevent potential contamination and to keep the amount of materials used to a minimum. The challenge here is securing the lid securely into the cardboard body, the diameter of which can change by as much as a few tenths of a millimetre.”

An 80% reduction in the use of virgin plastic

Sonoco responded to the challenge and the end result of the project is that Cristalco has now reduced the amount of virgin plastic in its primary packaging by 80% since 2019. This compares with a reduction of 64% just before the Sugar Daddy switch to rigid paper containers.

The new Sonoco rigid paper containers are available on supermarket shelves, under the both the “Daddy” and “Erstein” brands, from June 2024.

  • Pringles launches a new ‘designed for recycling’ paper-based tube

Pringles launches a new ‘designed for recycling’ paper-based tube

Now, one of the most iconic brands is making a more sustainable switch.

In a historic moment for the snacking industry, which reflects the world’s collective mission of acting and consuming more sustainably, Kellanova Europe has given its Pringles tube a more sustainable redesign.

Together with Sonoco, Kellanova Europe has redesigned its Pringles packaging to make it widely recyclable by replacing the metal bottom with a paper fibre-based bottom.

Earlier this year, Kellanova Europe’s Belgian engineering and R&D teams announced the official launch of the new ‘designed for recycling’ Pringles tube and introduced the new paper sealing technology on production lines in Mechelen Belgium. These specially designed machines once fully operational across all production lines will be able to produce more than 1 billion perfectly sealed recyclable Pringles tubes per year.

The original Pringles tube, which many households are familiar with, is iconic and “has been a defining feature of the product since it was launched in 1967 in the USA”, says Kellanova.

The new tube retains the brand’s iconic cylindrical shape – enabling the crisps to remain stacked. The shape and stacked nature of the crisps is part of the Pringles image and adds an element of fun for the consumer. Furthermore, the new paper-based tube protects the chips and preserves the flavour of the Pringles to help keep them as fresh as the day they were made. Consumers can also reclose the tubes with the recyclable plastic lid to ensure the chips stay fresh after opening.

Most importantly, the new paper-based tube takes into account “Circularity by Design” guidelines from the European fibre-based packaging value chain, the 4Evergreen alliance, and obtains a good recyclability score for its suitability for recycling in standard paper mills under 4evergreen’s Recyclability Evaluation Protocol. The tubes are accepted in recycling streams across Europe, as the new paper end makes it easier to recycle for paper recyclers. The launch follows Kellanova’s trial of a steel can in Italy in 2019 and a paper tube in the UK in 2020. The vast majority of the paper used for the old and new tube is made from recycled material, helping to boost the circular economy for recycled paper packaging.

The introduction of the recyclable Pringles tube is an important step towards Kellanova’s commitment of all its packaging being recyclable, reusable and compostable by 2030. Ultimately, the new paper-based Pringles tube sets an example for the food packaging industry while bolstering brand loyalty too.

Seàn Cairns, President – Global Rigid Paper and Closures (RPC) at Sonoco, worked with both companies’ technical teams, to develop the new ‘designed for recycling’ Pringles tube.  He notes that consumers are more aware than ever of how their purchasing behaviours are impacting the environment, as well as the more sustainable packaging options available to them. “With this in mind,” he says, “it’s important for businesses to stay ahead of the curve by exploring new packaging technologies and materials.”

Highlighting the importance of partnership in packaging design, he adds: “It was a pleasure working with Kellanova and we look forward to seeing how the new paper-based Pringles tube is received by the market. We hope the success of this project inspires other companies and brands to convert to more sustainable packaging.”

Sonoco has long been committed to increasing the paper content in its packaging to maximise its recyclability.  Sonoco has taken steps over the years to re-design its packaging and make it more sustainable. This process involved the company hugely investing in research and development to reduce or, where possible, completely remove the plastic and metal components of its packaging.

The result of this is Sonoco’s successful, rigid paper packaging lines as part of the EnviroSense® family including a range of paper containers such as GREENCAN® and EnviroStick™.

The new Pringles paper-based recyclable tubes are already available in Belgium, in the UK (initially available at UK Tesco and One Stop stores) and in the Netherlands with plans to scale up their launch across Europe.
