  • Kotányi launches new Spices range for Austria and Germany region in Sonoco’s GREENCAN® Packaging

Kotányi launches new Spices range for Austria and Germany region in Sonoco’s GREENCAN® Packaging

This fourth-generation Austrian family business partnered with Sonoco to launch its latest spice range in the fully recyclable GreenCan® solution.

Hockenheim, Germany – Sonoco is pleased to partner with Kotányi GmbH – an Austrian family-owned company with over 140 years of experience in the world of spices. Together, they are setting new standards in quality and sustainability by combining innovative packaging solutions with high-quality herbs and spice blends. The new spice range is being launched in Sonoco’s GreenCan® packaging, highlighting the brand’s commitment to sustainability.

The latest launch from Kotányi reflects the evolving preferences of today’s consumer and includes a selection of meticulously crafted mixes such as: Cool Chick, Little Italy, Potato Party, Wonder Wok, Curry Crush, Avocado Love and more. The contemporary flavours cater to growing fusion trends and aim to engage younger target audiences, further achieved by the fun and modern label designs. These mixtures are perfect for a variety of vegan and non-vegan recipes, and Sonoco’s GreenCan® solution plays a crucial role in this commitment, offering a robust, practical, and widely recyclable packaging alternative, with an integrated paper lid.

This launch in Sonoco GreenCan® solution aligns with the objectives of the EU Green Deal, namely embracing a life-cycle approach to circularity. This sustainable launch has received positive feedback from retailers across Europe, who recognise the innovation in both the product and its packaging. Sonoco’s GreenCan® ensures that the packaging is not only functional, but also environmentally responsible, with the can body and lid made from 94% paper, including 69% recycled paper. The remaining 6% consists of the barrier protection.

Alexandra Mayr, Marketing Manager at Kotányi, stated: “Sustainability is a core principle embedded in all our processes at Kotányi. For this latest product launch, Sonoco’s GreenCan® was the clear choice for our packaging – aligning perfectly with our environmental values. The innovative flavours in this new range were specifically developed for a younger audience in mind. Combined with GreenCan’s high paper content, they underscore our brand’s mission: our innovation shapes your enjoyment.

We’ve already received highly positive feedback from retailers, who have praised both the sustainable concept and the appealing design of the product and its packaging. We look forward to the market’s broader response and are committed to continuing our successful collaboration with Sonoco.”

Axel Tesson, Sales Manager for Sonoco Consumer Europe, added: “Our partnership with Kotányi signals our commitment to providing the ideal sustainable solutions that reinforce brands’ visions. Our GreenCan® solution reflects Kotányi’s environmental responsibility without compromising high-quality packaging for the customer.  We are delighted to be part of this sustainable journey with Kotányi and look forward to what the future brings.”

  • Grands Moulins de Paris Celebrate 60 Years of the Iconic Francine Brand with Limited-Edition Sonoco GreenCan® Packaging

Grands Moulins de Paris Celebrate 60 Years of the Iconic Francine Brand with Limited-Edition Sonoco GreenCan® Packaging

Marking six decades of Francine flour, this collaboration between Sonoco and Grands Moulins de Paris highlights sustainable innovation with the GreenCan® packaging.

Habsheim, France – Sonoco, a global leader in value-added sustainable metal and fibre packaging, and Grands Moulins de Paris (GMP), a century-old miller and the market leader in terms of value in the supermarket flour sector with its Francine brand, are proud to celebrate the 60th anniversary of this symbolic brand. As part of this milestone, GMP is launching a limited-edition design of Francine’s flagship Suprême flour in Sonoco’s GreenCan® packaging, paying tribute to the brand’s heritage while reinforcing their shared commitment to sustainability.

Founded in 1929, Grand Moulins de Paris is proud to belong to the 10,000 farmers in north-eastern France who own the VIVESCIA cooperative group. GMP selects the best 100% French breadmaking wheat from its eight mills to produce quality flours and milling mixes for small-scale bakeries, the food industry, and supermarkets in France and abroad. GMP promotes French milling and baking expertise, notably through the iconic Francine brand. Its passion for taste and innovation is also passed on through the Paris Bakery and Patisserie School, which trains almost 450 students (young people and adults) every year.

To mark the 60th anniversary of the iconic Francine brand, Grands Moulins de Paris has launched an extensive 360° communication plan which began in February, including in-store activations, internally with all employees and staff and digital initiatives on social media channels, of the brand and of Grands Moulins de Paris. Additionally, the brand’s three flagship references including the Suprême flour packaged in Sonoco GreenCan® paper container, are available in limited editions, paying homage to the original graphic codes of the Francine brand.  Sonoco is supporting the rollout of this limited edition.

In the 1980s, Francine was the first brand to launch a range of flours in rigid containers, with the iconic Farine Suprême, bringing greater convenience to the kitchen.   More than four decades later, still true to its leadership role, the brand was already exploring solutions to limit its environmental impact. From this perspective, GMP chose Sonoco’s GreenCan® solution, which made it possible to limit the environmental impact by promoting circular and  responsible use of packaging materials, in line with GMP’s sustainable development commitments. With the Sonoco GreenCan® container, GMP combines robustness, practicality, recyclability, and re-use. GreenCan® is a solution designed as a fully recyclable paper-based, with up to 96% paper content and over 60% recycled materials.

Guillaume Sireix, Director of Sonoco GreenCan Studio, has a deep-rooted connection to the Francine brand. Having worked on the project for over 18 years, he continues the legacy of his father, Georges Sireix, who was instrumental in the development of GreenCan®. Reflecting on this journey, Guillaume shared: “Working on the Francine brand with my father was an incredible journey. His vision for sustainable, high-quality packaging lives on, and I’m proud to continue our partnership with GMP as we celebrate this major milestone.”

Philippe Choquet, Sales Manager for Sonoco Consumer Europe, added: “Grands Moulins de Paris has been a fantastic partner over the years, and we truly value the trust they place in us. The Sonoco GreenCan® solution perfectly aligns with GMP’s commitment to sustainability and premium quality. We’re excited to see the limited-edition Francine packaging come to life and look forward to many more years of collaboration.”

With over 96% recyclability and more than 60% recycled content, Sonoco’s GreenCan® is a testament to the company’s dedication to sustainable innovation. The limited-edition Francine Suprême flour packaging will be available in stores as part of the anniversary celebrations, offering consumers a nostalgic yet forward-thinking take on a beloved brand.

  • DoggyLove packs plant-based dog treats in Sonoco’s GREENCAN®

DoggyLove packs plant-based dog treats in Sonoco’s GREENCAN®

Sonoco’s recyclable paper-based cans are a perfect fit with the company’s commitment to natural, organic produce and sustainability

Hockenheim, Germany – Pet snack manufacturing start-up, DoggyLove, based in Germany, has partnered with Sonoco and the paper-based GREENCAN® solution to bring its organic, plant-based pet treats to market.

Originally founded in 1956 as a butcher’s shop, and then later a catering business, this family-run firm recently decided to take things in a totally different direction, re-inventing itself as a pet food manufacturer. Following extensive consultations with veterinarians throughout 2023, DoggyLove began trading in 2024 – and finding the perfect packaging partner, with whom to launch its new range of products, was key.

“Our new business is personal to us, inspired by own dog, a labrador called Peggy, who was part of our lives for 15 years,” says Christoph Wirth, who owns and runs the business with his wife, Konstanze. “Peggy was the inspiration for DoggyLove and our core mission now is to develop healthy snacks to promote the health and well-being of all dogs.”

“We thought long and hard about what the right packaging was to present this product to market,” Mr Wirth continues. “To reflect the values of our brand, it was very important to us that it was both high quality and sustainable. Initially we wanted to use different packaging types from Asia for our products, but we quickly realised that it would entail the long delivery times and an increase in global political uncertainty for us. This has led us to decide in favour of a locally manufactured solution, which was also a perfect match with our values: GREENCAN®, the paper-based can from Sonoco.”

He adds: “GREENCAN® was unlike anything we saw from any other packaging provider, and it appealed to us on multiple levels because of the short delivery times, and because of its sustainability credentials, which are not only ethically important to us, but are also very important to our customers, giving us another angle to talk about in our marketing. Finally, the creative possibilities of being able to employ full-surface printing on the packaging, was also really appealing.”

“As a new brand, the way in which we’re perceived is important to us, and Sonoco’s GREENCAN® solution helps to reinforce our holistic brand image of responsible and sustainable production. We see this as just the beginning of our partnership and we’re already planning other potential products that would also be a perfect fit with this packaging.”

DoggyLove’s customers have also been impressed with the packaging – with early customer feedback describing it as “high quality”.

On the experience of working with Sonoco, Mr Wirth says: “We’ve always found our collaboration with Sonoco to be very pleasant and constructive. As a start-up, it was important for us to find the right partner to help bring our products to market and Sonoco has been very supportive during the whole product launch process. The service we’ve received has always been friendly, and both solution- and goal-orientated, with all of our questions dealt with quickly and comprehensively.”

Sascha Di Nardi, Sales Manager at Sonoco Germany, comments: “It’s been a pleasure working with Mr Wirth and the team to bring DoggyLove products to the market. We’re delighted to have found a suitable sustainable alternative in GREENCAN® for their packaging and are pleased to hear that they have had a positive response from their customers too. We look forward to continuing our partnership with DoggyLove in the future.”

  • Premier Foods reduce gravy Bisto’s environmental impact by reducing the height of its Bisto paperboard drum

Premier Foods reduce gravy Bisto’s environmental impact by reducing the height of its Bisto paperboard drum

Sonoco’s fully recyclable paperboard packaging solution will help Premier Foods to remove 40 tonnes of packaging used for its best-selling Bisto gravy drum, as it aims to reduce its environmental footprint.

Premier Foods, one of Britain’s largest listed food companies, is continuing its work to reduce its environmental impact while helping its customers make more sustainable choices. The food manufacturer has introduced its new sized Bisto Gravy product, which will now come in caddies that are 8mm smaller than the previous edition. This will save 40 tonnes of paper annually at Premier Food’s Bisto manufacturing line in Worksop, Nottinghamshire.

Using recyclable paperboard drums produced by Sonoco, one of the largest global packaging companies, the new Bisto packaging gives shoppers an additional 20g of gravy granules (190g total) – approximately six more portions per tub – for the exact same price as before, while being presented in packaging that uses fewer resources.

Sonoco’s paperboard container is made from recycled paper fibre, including a paperboard end. All inks and adhesives are water-based, and all materials used in the packaging are easily separable within the recycling process. The UK requires at least 85% paperboard* to accept packaging in the paper waste stream, and the Bisto drums exceed that requirement as it is made of 95% paperboard, allowing shoppers to dispose of all empty Bisto caddies via UK-wide kerbside recycling collections.

Philip Brown, UK Sales Manager at Sonoco Consumer Products Europe says: “For Premier Foods, sustainable packaging solutions are essential, and they are also very aware of the need to reduce the amount of packaging that is being used for each product. Premier’s decision to reduce the height of the drum demonstrates its determination to give its customers a solution that uses less resources, while also giving them more of the products they love at the same great price, and with freshness and quality assured. We’re delighted that they have adopted our paperboard packaging solution to meet their sustainability goals.”

Premier Foods is in the process applying the new height to all its gravy drums, which include Chicken, Onion, Turkey and Vegetable.

*The U.K. currently requires at least 85% paperboard to accept packaging in the paper waste stream, with a plan to increase to 90% required by 2023. This paper-based packaging format exceeds that requirement as it is made of 95% paperboard.

“Reducing the size of our drum is a great example of how small changes can ladder up to make a big difference. We make around 50 million Bisto gravy drums each year and so change of this scale requires real collaboration. We’re really pleased to have found a more sustainable solution while retaining the quality of Bisto that people love and expect.”

pladis further boosts sustainability credentials through Sonoco’s fully recyclable paper can

The leading global snack manufacturer is taking full advantage of Sonoco’s paper can range for its Mini Cheddars, Cheeselets, Cracker Crisps and Twiglets products.

pladis, the global snack company behind some of the UK’s most loved and iconic brands, has been on a mission to substantially reduce its environmental impact by updating the packaging of various products to more ecological alternatives. This is part of the company’s sustainability agenda, which reflects its commitment to making all its packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025. Most recently, pladis has made steps forward to move toward more paper-based solutions – its Mini Cheddars and Cheeselets ranges now use Sonoco’s paper can with paperboard end. Cracker Crisps and Mini Twiglets are also set to use Sonoco’s paper can later this year.

“We are using this new, innovative product from Sonoco for the summer launch of our Mini Cheddars and Cheeselets caddies, helping our customers to tap into the ‘big summer nights in’ from the comfort of their own homes. In September, we’ll be utilising Sonoco’s paper can for our customer’s favourite festive caddies, which include Mini Cheddars, Treeslets and Twiglets,” says Christopher Owen, Marketing Controller at pladis UK&I.

“We feel these occasions present the perfect opportunity to utilise Sonoco’s paper can with paperboard end. The container is made with recycled, recyclable and renewable paper fibres — making it a responsible choice from the beginning to the end of its lifecycle – perfect for what we’re looking to achieve as a brand, and it helps consumers make a more sustainable snack selection.”

Owen concludes, “Moving to Sonoco’s paper can solution is part of our wider mission to make our packaging easier to recycle. This is integral to our sustainability agenda, which illustrates our commitment to making our packaging more sustainable and is one of many great strides we’ve made in this area already.”

Philip Brown, UK Sales Manager at Sonoco Consumer Products Europe says, “We’ve been working with pladis for 13 years now, and we’re immensely proud to have provided them with various innovative packaging solutions for their immensely popular snack ranges.

  • When packaging is part of the solution

When packaging is part of the solution

German spice manufacturer Aromica uses eco-friendly Sonoco packaging in order to achieve premium sustainability.

Delivering superior taste and premium quality comes with the job description of any respectable chef, since their line of work demands precision, excellence and finesse. When preparing their culinary creations, they rely not only on their own mastery of the craft, but also on premium ingredients. This is where high-quality spices from Aromica Tradizio come in: the line of organic and sustainably sourced spices and spice blends meets the high standards of professional chefs and culinary enthusiasts alike, without neglecting environmental concerns.

For its eco-friendly packaging, the German manufacturer relies on rigid paper containers from Sonoco Europe. They feature a recyclable cardboard can and a biodegradable cork lid, offering optimal protection for the contents while simultaneously reflecting Aromica’s focus on sustainability.

Being a trained chef himself, Rudolf Rehrl, founder and CEO of Aromica, wanted to create a product that not only delivered premium quality in terms of taste, but also excelled in terms of eco-friendliness. He founded Aromica after noticing an increased demand for high-quality spices among chefs: “As a chef, you are constantly looking for new and surprising ways to impress your guests. Unusual and premium-quality ingredients are an excellent source of inspiration. With our Aromica Tradizio line, we can now also satisfy customers’ growing demands for sustainability – with the potential to also sell our products in selected grocery stores,” says Rehrl. Currently, the Aromica Tradizio line, which features exotic organic spices such as opal basil and mountain pine from the Alps, is available in Italy, Austria and, most recently, Germany.

Cardboard and cork for a perfect match

Sonoco’s eco-friendly packaging ensures that the spices stand out from the competition on store shelves, retain their premium taste and quality, and thus appeal to professional chefs and passionate home cooks alike. Rudolf Rehrl is convinced that the collaboration with Sonoco has been an important factor in his company’s success: “We constantly seek to supply our clients with new and exciting high-quality products, without having to compromise on our promise of sustainability. With Sonoco’s help, we can deliver just that.” The rigid paper containers for Aromica Tradizio are manufactured at the Sonoco plant in Montanay, France. With a diameter of 73 mm, the cans consist of a variety of sustainable materials: the body has a thin, aluminium-free inner lining, allowing it to be recycled via the paper wastestream, while the reclosable cork lid can simply be sorted with the organic waste. This fits perfectly with Aromica’s holistic approach to sustainability: “We source our ingredients from independent local farmers following the natural harvest cycle and package it responsibly at the end. To me, that is sustainability thought through at each stage of the process,” says Rehrl.

    A reliable partner for sustainability

Sonoco produces packaging for both global players and regional companies alike, and provides customised packaging solutions on every level. Francesco Giannolo, Sales Director Sonoco Consumer Products Europe, is excited about working with the German spice manufacturer: “Our collaboration with Aromica is a good example of Sonoco’s ability to supply packaging that perfectly fits each brand’s profile. We create packaging that is functional, eye-catching and in line with our customer’s vision. Working closely with Aromica, Sonoco developed innovative features for this highly dynamic company, thus boosting their growth journey”.

all4pack 2016: Sonoco presents broad range of rigid paperboard containers

Versatile Food Packaging Offers Maximum Sustainability, Convenience and Product Safety.

Hockenheim, Germany, November 9, 2016 – (NYSE: SON). If you’re looking for environment-friendly, convenient and safe food packaging solutions, Sonoco’s rigid paperboard containers are the product of choice. The robust all-rounders are ideal not only for a broad variety of filling goods, but also offer numerous advantages with regard to recyclability, functionality and product protection. From 14 to 17 November, visitors to this year’s all4pack (formerly Emballage) exhibition in Paris can see for themselves the advantages of rigid paperboard containers. In hall 7, booth H133, Sonoco Consumer Products Europe (operating two plants in France) will present e.g. a new rigid paperboard container featuring a recyclable sprinkler lid, versatile options for easy dosage of salt and sugar, and safe packaging solutions for highly sensible filling goods.

Fully sustainable: Rigid paper containers with compostable sprinkler lidsSonoco’s rigid paperboard containers consist to a large extent of refined recycling paper, making them a particularly sustainable solution. Rigid paper containers with a diameter between 40 mm and 99 mm can additionally be equipped with a sealed-in cardboard bottom. At all4pack, the packaging specialist will now present an even more environmentally friendly version of its popular convenience packaging: A rigid paperboard container featuring a compostable Vegetop® sprinkler lid. The new packaging solution is the result of a joint endeavour by Sonoco and Vegeplast, a French company that specializes in biodegradable plastics. The package’s unique feature is its sprinkler lid made of Vegemat®, a plastic material made from 100 per cent biodegradable materials and fully compostable in accordance with the European standard EN 13432. The rigid paperboard container comes in two different sizes with a diameter of 60 or 73 millimetres. The variable height allows for adjustments according to the quantity of packed content. Thanks to its material properties, the container with Vegetop® sprinkler is particularly suitable for dietary supplements and dry foods such as grains, sugar or dry fruits. “Our new rigid paperboard container with Vegetop® combines the packaging expertise of Sonoco with innovative plastics technology. The result is a comprehensive, environmentally friendly solution which fully meets our costumers’ demands with regard to sustainability and convenience,” says Rolf Regelmann, Director Sales and Marketing at Sonoco Costumer Products.

Dosage made easy: Convenient rigid paperboard containers with sprinkler lidsSprinkler lids are convenient for dosing free-flowing products such as salt or sugar. At all4pack Sonoco will showcase a comprehensive selection of rigid paperboard containers with different sprinkler lid versions. Beyond precise dosing, the shapely containers offer a crucial added value for retail and marketing. Thanks to their extensive potential for decorating, they have a high shelf presence and provide a vital competitive advantage. The rigid paperboard containers with sprinkler lids and integrated re-closures also provide ideal product and aroma protection. Rigid paperboard containers play an important role on the French market with its large salt segment: Companies such as Salins du Midi, Bioforce and Les Salines de Guérande distribute their premium salt products in the versatile containers.

Safely packaged: rigid paperboard containers with Sealed Safe® and Ultraseal®With sensible products such as baby milk formula, barrier properties are of great importance. They ensure the safety of products that are particularly sensitive to oxygen. Sonoco’s rigid paperboard containers with Ultraseal® and Sealed Safe® meet these special requirements: Its special metal closure resembles that of commercial tin cans and reliably protects the content. The container’s spiral-wound body, aluminium inner lining, and tin bottom combine to protect the product. Sonoco even works to ensure maximum product protection during the manufacturing process, which takes place in a clean room with UV sterilization. “Especially when it comes to the manufacturing of rigid paper containers for infant food, we work according to the extremely high hygiene standards that we have developed for this particular packaging solution,” emphasizes Regelmann. “By doing so, we ensure that our products satisfy the highest quality standards.”

  • Amica introduces Rigid Paper Drum in successful Promotion Campaign

Amica introduces Rigid Paper Drum in successful Promotion Campaign

Sonoco provides first rigid paper drum on the Italian food market for Amica’s “Eldorada” chips

Hockenheim, Germany — (NYSE: SON). The Italian food market has an entirely new packaging solution: Amica, Italy’s second-largest snack producer with an annual revenue of approximately 85 million Euros, packages its traditionally manufactured “Eldorada” potato chips in rigid paper drums. The large rigid paper containers, produced by Sonoco Consumer Products Europe, are ideal to share the delicious snacks with a group of friends, for instance at a barbecue or during a sports event. Amica successfully introduced the new packaging format in a promotion campaign during the summer months with a focus on specific sales channels such as Autogrill motorway stores.

While they are very popular in other European countries, rigid paper drums have not been used for food products to date in Italy. Some Italian consumers still recall the famous rigid paper drums for “Dash” laundry detergent back in the seventies and eighties. Now, Amica is the first company to launch this packaging solution in the local market. The snack producer owned by founder Alfredo Moratti opted for Sonoco’s modern classic in its 2016 summer campaign for the “Eldorada” premium chips. Several advantages convinced Amica of this packaging solution: the label design, format, and filling level of rigid paper drums can be changed quickly, enabling the producer to realize small batches cost-effectively. This makes rigid paper drums particularly suited for temporary promotional activities or product launches. They also allow for co-marketing. A chips producer could for example place additional dipping sauces in the drum.

Highly popular and convenient snack packaging

The rigid paper drums for the “Eldorada” chips have a 176 millimeter diameter and are 360 millimeters tall. They come with a plastic snap lid and carrying handle. Sonoco delivers the rigid paper drums to Amica’s headquarter in Castiglione delle Stiviere, where the snack producer can quickly fill them with the pre-packaged potato chips. Environmentally friendly production is very important to Amica, so it was crucial that Sonoco uses recycled paper board to produce 90 percent of the body and bottom of its rigid paper containers. Since Amica additionally packages the chips in a large plastic bag, the rigid paper drum does not require an inner lining. The combination of both packaging solutions combines maximum product protection with high convenience for consumers. The rigid paper drum is ideal to share the snacks with a larger group of people, e.g. at parties. If the chips are not eaten at once, the re-closable snap lid ensures that the content remains fresh and crispy.

Perfect ingredients for a successful sales campaign

Rigid paper drums offer additional value with regard to branding and marketing: at the point of sale (POS), Sonoco’s drums immediately catch the consumer’s attention due to their size and high-end decoration. The laminated all-around label provides a wide range of options for individual brand designs and decoration. For the Amica potato chips, the plastic carrying handle is another important detail. Vendors instruct their sales staff to put the handle in a ready-to-carry position, thus raising the number of impulse purchases. During their 2016 summer campaign, Amica distributed “Eldorada” drums through specific sales channels such as motorway stores. This strategy paid off – beginning with a relatively small batch, Amica has reordered several times and demand is still increasing.
