  • Sonoco Achieves Prestigious Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC) Accreditation

Sonoco Achieves Prestigious Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC) Accreditation

Hockenheim, Germany – Sonoco Products Company (NYSE: SON), a global leader in value-added sustainable packaging, today announced it has earned accreditation with the Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC).

Sonoco joined PSC in 2024 to align its packaging innovations with PSC’s mission of advancing sustainable business practices across the pet industry. PSC accreditation is awarded to companies demonstrating tangible progress in environmental stewardship, social responsibility and transparent reporting.

“As a packaging provider with more than a century of experience, we see the pet sector as a powerful opportunity to apply our sustainability expertise where it matters most—to people, pets and the planet,” said Scott Byrne, Sonoco’s Vice President of Global Sustainability. “This recognition validates the work we’re doing to offer scalable, circular solutions that deliver on both performance and environmental responsibility.”

Sonoco’s portfolio reflects this commitment with options that balance quality, freshness and recyclability. Its two and three-piece steel cans offer durability, moisture protection and full recyclability. Meanwhile, its rigid paper containers feature up to 90% recycled fibre, supporting extended shelf life while reducing environmental impact. An excellent example of this is Sonoco’s GREENCAN® solution. GREENCAN® features an impressive 92-98% paper content and includes not only a paper bottom, but also an integrated paper lid. Offering enhanced print capabilities and strong curbside recyclability, it’s designed to offer not only an environmentally responsible option, but also to maintain performance and protection. GREENCAN® is already being used to package a wide range of products – with pet food and treats among them. German pet snack start-up DoggyLove was an early adopter, calling it “a high-quality, sustainable solution that reflects the values of our company.”

“Every step toward becoming a more sustainable packaging solutions provider must be informed by a clear vision,” said Sonoco President and CEO Howard Coker. “Our people are the driving force behind these initiatives and product innovations.”

Sonoco’s accreditation goes beyond packaging. Through the Sonoco Foundation (Sonoco in Action), the company has partnered with the Darlington County Humane Society to reshape the trajectory of animal welfare and education in Hartsville, South Carolina, where the Company is based.

  • Grands Moulins de Paris Celebrate 60 Years of the Iconic Francine Brand with Limited-Edition Sonoco GreenCan® Packaging

Grands Moulins de Paris Celebrate 60 Years of the Iconic Francine Brand with Limited-Edition Sonoco GreenCan® Packaging

Marking six decades of Francine flour, this collaboration between Sonoco and Grands Moulins de Paris highlights sustainable innovation with the GreenCan® packaging.

Habsheim, France – Sonoco, a global leader in value-added sustainable metal and fibre packaging, and Grands Moulins de Paris (GMP), a century-old miller and the market leader in terms of value in the supermarket flour sector with its Francine brand, are proud to celebrate the 60th anniversary of this symbolic brand. As part of this milestone, GMP is launching a limited-edition design of Francine’s flagship Suprême flour in Sonoco’s GreenCan® packaging, paying tribute to the brand’s heritage while reinforcing their shared commitment to sustainability.

Founded in 1929, Grand Moulins de Paris is proud to belong to the 10,000 farmers in north-eastern France who own the VIVESCIA cooperative group. GMP selects the best 100% French breadmaking wheat from its eight mills to produce quality flours and milling mixes for small-scale bakeries, the food industry, and supermarkets in France and abroad. GMP promotes French milling and baking expertise, notably through the iconic Francine brand. Its passion for taste and innovation is also passed on through the Paris Bakery and Patisserie School, which trains almost 450 students (young people and adults) every year.

To mark the 60th anniversary of the iconic Francine brand, Grands Moulins de Paris has launched an extensive 360° communication plan which began in February, including in-store activations, internally with all employees and staff and digital initiatives on social media channels, of the brand and of Grands Moulins de Paris. Additionally, the brand’s three flagship references including the Suprême flour packaged in Sonoco GreenCan® paper container, are available in limited editions, paying homage to the original graphic codes of the Francine brand.  Sonoco is supporting the rollout of this limited edition.

In the 1980s, Francine was the first brand to launch a range of flours in rigid containers, with the iconic Farine Suprême, bringing greater convenience to the kitchen.   More than four decades later, still true to its leadership role, the brand was already exploring solutions to limit its environmental impact. From this perspective, GMP chose Sonoco’s GreenCan® solution, which made it possible to limit the environmental impact by promoting circular and  responsible use of packaging materials, in line with GMP’s sustainable development commitments. With the Sonoco GreenCan® container, GMP combines robustness, practicality, recyclability, and re-use. GreenCan® is a solution designed as a fully recyclable paper-based, with up to 96% paper content and over 60% recycled materials.

Guillaume Sireix, Director of Sonoco GreenCan Studio, has a deep-rooted connection to the Francine brand. Having worked on the project for over 18 years, he continues the legacy of his father, Georges Sireix, who was instrumental in the development of GreenCan®. Reflecting on this journey, Guillaume shared: “Working on the Francine brand with my father was an incredible journey. His vision for sustainable, high-quality packaging lives on, and I’m proud to continue our partnership with GMP as we celebrate this major milestone.”

Philippe Choquet, Sales Manager for Sonoco Consumer Europe, added: “Grands Moulins de Paris has been a fantastic partner over the years, and we truly value the trust they place in us. The Sonoco GreenCan® solution perfectly aligns with GMP’s commitment to sustainability and premium quality. We’re excited to see the limited-edition Francine packaging come to life and look forward to many more years of collaboration.”

With over 96% recyclability and more than 60% recycled content, Sonoco’s GreenCan® is a testament to the company’s dedication to sustainable innovation. The limited-edition Francine Suprême flour packaging will be available in stores as part of the anniversary celebrations, offering consumers a nostalgic yet forward-thinking take on a beloved brand.

The innovative Soft Drops are made with sustainable insect protein and fibre-rich sweet potato and include carefully selected active ingredients tailored to each function. It helps create optimal conditions for the gut, preparing it to absorb the nutrients contained in the product more effectively, while naturally supporting digestive health.

NaturDrops’ commitment to sustainability is evident in every aspect of their business, from ingredient sourcing to production. With Sonoco’s GreenCan® solution, the company ensures that its packaging is not only functional but also environmentally responsible. Sonoco’s GreenCan® is made from 96% paper, including 69% recycled material, with the remaining 4% consisting of the barrier protection. This sustainable design helps minimise waste while maintaining the high standards of quality expected by NaturDrops’ customers.

“The decision to use a sustainable packaging solution like GreenCan® was a natural fit for us, as our brand is built on the core values of naturalness, responsibility, and sustainability,” said Tanja Weinand, co-founder of NaturDrops. “From the name to the colours, imagery, and ingredients, everything revolves around the theme of nature. • DoggyLove packs plant-based dog treats in Sonoco’s GREENCAN®

DoggyLove packs plant-based dog treats in Sonoco’s GREENCAN®

Sonoco’s recyclable paper-based cans are a perfect fit with the company’s commitment to natural, organic produce and sustainability

Hockenheim, Germany – Pet snack manufacturing start-up, DoggyLove, based in Germany, has partnered with Sonoco and the paper-based GREENCAN® solution to bring its organic, plant-based pet treats to market.

Originally founded in 1956 as a butcher’s shop, and then later a catering business, this family-run firm recently decided to take things in a totally different direction, re-inventing itself as a pet food manufacturer. Following extensive consultations with veterinarians throughout 2023, DoggyLove began trading in 2024 – and finding the perfect packaging partner, with whom to launch its new range of products, was key.

“Our new business is personal to us, inspired by own dog, a labrador called Peggy, who was part of our lives for 15 years,” says Christoph Wirth, who owns and runs the business with his wife, Konstanze. “Peggy was the inspiration for DoggyLove and our core mission now is to develop healthy snacks to promote the health and well-being of all dogs.”

“We thought long and hard about what the right packaging was to present this product to market,” Mr Wirth continues. “To reflect the values of our brand, it was very important to us that it was both high quality and sustainable. Initially we wanted to use different packaging types from Asia for our products, but we quickly realised that it would entail the long delivery times and an increase in global political uncertainty for us. This has led us to decide in favour of a locally manufactured solution, which was also a perfect match with our values: GREENCAN®, the paper-based can from Sonoco.”

He adds: “GREENCAN® was unlike anything we saw from any other packaging provider, and it appealed to us on multiple levels because of the short delivery times, and because of its sustainability credentials, which are not only ethically important to us, but are also very important to our customers, giving us another angle to talk about in our marketing. Finally, the creative possibilities of being able to employ full-surface printing on the packaging, was also really appealing.”

“As a new brand, the way in which we’re perceived is important to us, and Sonoco’s GREENCAN® solution helps to reinforce our holistic brand image of responsible and sustainable production. We see this as just the beginning of our partnership and we’re already planning other potential products that would also be a perfect fit with this packaging.”

DoggyLove’s customers have also been impressed with the packaging – with early customer feedback describing it as “high quality”.

On the experience of working with Sonoco, Mr Wirth says: “We’ve always found our collaboration with Sonoco to be very pleasant and constructive. As a start-up, it was important for us to find the right partner to help bring our products to market and Sonoco has been very supportive during the whole product launch process. The service we’ve received has always been friendly, and both solution- and goal-orientated, with all of our questions dealt with quickly and comprehensively.”

Sascha Di Nardi, Sales Manager at Sonoco Germany, comments: “It’s been a pleasure working with Mr Wirth and the team to bring DoggyLove products to the market. We’re delighted to have found a suitable sustainable alternative in GREENCAN® for their packaging and are pleased to hear that they have had a positive response from their customers too. We look forward to continuing our partnership with DoggyLove in the future.”

Oudemans comments: “We’re excited to participate in the upcoming Sustainability in Packaging Europe 2024 event. We’re committed to driving positive environmental impact with our packaging innovations. In addition, we look forward to helping even more businesses convert to paper-based packaging.”

Görlitz adds: “Our participation and presence at this prestigious event aligns with Sonoco’s long-standing mission to create and deliver sustainable packaging, as well as circularity, globally.”

At the event, Sonoco will also exhibit its new 95% paper-based can with a paper end, which is part of its recyclable EnviroSense® portfolio, as well as its GREENCAN® and EnviroStick® packaging.

Part of the EnviroSense® portfolio, Sonoco’s 95% paper-based can is designed for various markets such as snacks and powdered coffee products with a milk froth. The new packaging incorporates a specially designed paper-based end and an option to include a valve on the membrane for a degassing application which plays a crucial role in protecting products like cappuccino, ensuring a perfect pour every time, while maintaining the convenience that consumers love. The innovative award-winning packaging solution, which is already in the market in some countries in Europe, is making a positive contribution to reducing packaging waste. It offers practical benefits, such as superior barrier properties that preserve the freshness and quality of the coffee, and a lightweight design for easy handling and transportation. Crucially, the new can meets the European and UK’s packaging regulations and is recyclable in existing systems across regions.

Recyclable by design, Sonoco’s rigid paperboard can is made with recycled fibre and features a highly effective oxygen and moisture barrier layer. This assures food safety and preserves shelf-life, while ensuring ease of recycling through household paper and cardboard streams.

Sonoco’s GREENCAN® recyclable paperboard package features a wide range of barrier properties. Available in multiple shapes and sizes – from round, square or rectangular; to oval, oblong or triangular – it is ‘designed to recycle’ paper can, providing a highly recyclable packaging solution, with robust barrier properties.

Join Sonoco and Kellanova as they present ‘The Journey to Circularity’ on 10 October, 12:25pm.

  • Charting an Unconventional Career in Packaging: An Interview with Lauren Benford

Charting an Unconventional Career in Packaging: An Interview with Lauren Benford

What does the pathway to a packaging career look like? It’s sometimes unconventional.

We chatted with a Senior Field HR Generalist for Sonoco Europe, Lauren Benford, about her unconventional career path in packaging. Lauren shared her Sonoco experience and how she expanded her knowledge and skillset by answering these 10 questions:

What did you do before joining Sonoco?

I always wanted to be a police officer, so I attended college from 2009 to 2011 to earn a Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) national diploma in public services. However, the government made cuts during that period and decreased their recruitment efforts in the sector. I had to rethink my career path.

Alongside being at college, I worked at a fast-food chain as a sandwich artist and stayed on once my college course was completed. I enjoyed working there, but I did not feel that this position was my long-term career. I began my search for something new.

How did you hear about your starting role and when did you start at Sonoco?

My online search revealed a vacancy for a business administration apprenticeship at Sonoco Chesterfield in the UK. I applied for this internship. Sonoco VP of Finance for Global Rigid Paper Containers, Tim Nash, and Associate Director of Human Resources in Europe, Stacy Williams, interviewed me, and I started with Sonoco in April 2012. I have worked here for over 11 years now.

What was your first Sonoco role?

While full-time at the Chesterfield site, I also worked toward my National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) Level 2 apprenticeship on the job. My main duties were dealing with incoming and outgoing mail, managing the time and attendance system and indirectly ordering items, such as stationery, PPE and maintenance supplies.

What learning opportunities did Sonoco offer you when you first joined?

Throughout my career, Sonoco has given me so many opportunities for which I will always be very grateful. After completing my NVQ Level 2 in business administration, I went on to complete Level 3. By this time, I started to pick up some human resources tasks, since my manager Stacy worked in human resources. During this time, I began to take a real interest in this function. I took on payroll for both the Chesterfield and the former Manchester manufacturing site (called Stokes Street) and achieved my payroll technician certificate (CIPP) in 2015. I then went on to study human resources practice, gaining certifications in Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) Level 3 in 2017, CIPD Level 5 in 2018 and recently CIPD Level 7 in 2023.

I was promoted to HR Assistant in April 2017, then to HR Officer in July 2018 and most recently to Senior Field HR Generalist in November 2022. During this time, the Manchester production site was closed. From 2018, I started to fully support the Bradford and Chesterfield sites.

What career-advancing qualifications have you gained since joining Sonoco?

Sonoco provided other learning opportunities throughout my career. Beyond what I previously mentioned, I became a mental health first aider, assisted with different business functions and gained real insight into how the business operates. During my qualification courses, I fortunately gained great networking opportunities to share ideas and experiences with other HR professionals. My professional development has increased my confidence and knowledge, enabling me to do my role effectively and to the best of my ability.

What experience has been your favourite at Sonoco so far?

I have really enjoyed the opportunities to visit different Sonoco sites, meeting new people and experiencing differing cultures. I have visited several sites across the UK and in Hockenheim, Germany. These visits were a great experience to see how others work and share knowledge.

What motivates you in your current role?

My current role is Senior Field HR Generalist. When Sonoco goes through changes, I embrace it and work to make it work for our employees. My passion for employee engagement motivates me to get things right for our employees.

How did your most recent qualification progress your career?

I recently qualified for CIPD Level 7 in strategic people management. After finishing my CIPD Level 5, I was very concerned about being able to commit the time needed to complete my Level 7 qualification, but the time came to bite the bullet and go for it. I finished this two-year academic qualification while working full-time, filling every Thursday evening and many weekends in the process. I am really proud of achieving this qualification that is equivalent to a master’s degree.

After taking a short breather, I can now focus on new areas of learning, such as assisting the Chesterfield site as we begin our Sonoco Performance System (SPS) journey. This SPS process could offer career progression for me to be a people manager in the future.

What advice would you offer those considering an alternative path into a packaging career?

It is never too late to make a career change, so do what you want to do. As you know, I didn’t continue to university after completing my college course when I was younger. At times I wondered if I may regret that decision. Looking back, I would not change anything about my career. I have gained so much experience throughout my time with Sonoco, and I still have a lot to learn. Through hard work, my full-time role and the full support of Sonoco, I have achieved degree-level qualifications.

What is something fun you enjoy outside of work?

If you need a small wall built or a DIY job completed, I’m the person to call as I did bricklaying, joinery, painting and decorating as one of my GSCEs. When I am not walking my blue whippet, Opie, I am probably spending time with my fiancé Joe, who proposed to me during a holiday in Bruges last year. I’m currently looking forward to celebrating my completion of CIPD Level 7 at graduation.

Looking to the future, I anticipate continuing my education and reinforcing my learning in the manufacturing industry at this global packaging company.

  • Starting a new role during a pandemic: Interview with Joe Curtis

Starting a new role during a pandemic: Interview with Joe Curtis

Working life changed drastically when the COVID-19 pandemic hit early last year, and for many, it’s been a tough ride to adjust overnight.

We caught up with Joe Curtis, Process & Continuous Improvement Engineer at Sonoco Consumer Products Europe, to hear how he has coped with the challenges of moving to a new house and starting a new role during a pandemic.

Joe joined us at our Chesterfield office in August 2020. He moved from Hull after graduating with BEng Chemical Engineering with first class honours (congrats Joe!).

How did you come to this job during the pandemic, and how are you finding it?

I, like many people during the pandemic, was unemployed and frustrated. At the beginning of August 2020, I received an interview invitation for a temporary 3-month contract as a graduate Process Engineer, I was ecstatic. I signed a house contract the day after accepting the role and moved to Chesterfield on Saturday and started my new position on Monday.

I have worked a few different jobs during my life and starting somewhere new is never easy; but nothing was quite as strange as starting somewhere that must operate during a pandemic. It was odd having to check how many people were in a room before entering and wearing a mask everywhere. Furthermore, the hand washing/sanitising routines were not something I was used to pre-pandemic. With all this said though I am very glad that Sonoco has taken COVID-19 restrictions so seriously and has been actively working to keep everyone safe.

What challenges have you come across during the pandemic, and how did you adapt to them?

It wasn’t all smooth sailing, especially with the quick move, but the Chesterfield team immediately made me feel welcome, even with the tough pandemic related restrictions. Having worked in a few different manufacturing environments I was pleasantly surprised at strong safety culture on the site.

What surprised you within the first 30 days about your new role, and working for Sonoco?

From the very first day I was given the chance to start on real projects to improve the plant, and immediately started learning, whilst shadowing experienced engineers working on the machinery around the plant. Meanwhile, in the office the European Director of Operations was assisting me in my projects and offered valuable insights into continuous improvement. My role is so incredibly varied, which is one of the reasons I enjoy it so much.

What learning opportunities have you had since you joined Sonoco?

Possibly the largest learning opportunity came just after being offered a full-time permanent role in November. I was placed on a lean six sigma training course provided via Sonoco through e-learning and given a major project on one of the main production lines on site. I am just about to start the E-Learning lectures for this and I’m looking forward to earning my qualification!

What aspects of your role are exciting to you?

Since starting here, I have created new standards for maintenance, machine setting and processes, in addition to chairing the daily direction setting meeting to discuss important plant tasks. There has not been a single day that hasn’t been challenging or rewarding and I have thoroughly enjoyed putting my engineering degree to good use. I particularly enjoy designing and creating new methods to set machines so that they work consistently and reliably. The excitement of being the first person to make an easy and effective way of doing something which people find useful is something that really motivates me.

What do you see as the future for your role?

There are also lots of exciting future projects to get involved with, for example, I am currently involved in early discussions of using 3D-printing technology to assist with prototyping engineering parts.

I look forward to developing further at Sonoco and can’t wait to see where this takes me or what I will end up working on as products change and our factory expands to more production lines.

  • Designed to Appeal: Sonoco at the FachPack 2019

Designed to Appeal: Sonoco at the FachPack 2019

Safe, convenient and sustainable: the demands on modern consumer packaging are diverse and can vary greatly from product to product.

But no matter which product it is, one thing is certain: the packaging plays a key role in consumers’ purchasing decisions. Above all, it needs to perfectly match consumers’ lifestyles – which are increasingly flexible and environmentally conscious. At this year’s FachPack in Nuremberg, Sonoco Europe will demonstrate that excellent branding, high convenience and sustainability can very well go hand in hand.

At booth 5-319, hall 5, visitors will be able to see for themselves how it’s done: from all-around-decorated cardboard cans to individually shaped IML containers – Sonoco Europe offers individual packaging designed for individuals.

    Cardboard ends for increased recyclability

Sonoco’s giveaway, which was specially manufactured for the FachPack, is a small snack can filled with freeze-dried fruit. It showcases how modern packaging solutions combine high sustainability with appealing design elements and convenience by featuring both a cardboard end and a digitally printed label. Digital printing offers an alternative to larger scale flexographic or gravure printing: since it doesn’t require the manufacturing of print cylinders or sleeves, it represents a flexible and cost-efficient way to quickly print smaller, yet high-quality batches of labels, which are ideal e.g. for seasonal or promotional products.

“It’s a great example of how you can further improve an already very sustainable packaging by changing or adding additional features like a paper bottom”, Cairns explains. “At Sonoco we prefer to see sustainability as a multifaceted concept rather than focusing on only one single aspect, such as recyclability. Of course, recyclability is an important component – but certainly not the only one that determines the sustainability of packaging.” An in-depth Piqet (Packaging Impact Quick Evaluation Tool) analysis, which is displayed at the Sonoco booth, will therefore invite visitors to discuss and also compare different packaging solutions with regard to six different evaluation criteria, including CO2 emissions, energy consumption, and recyclability. With the help of Piqet spider graphs, developers can compare e.g. Sonoco’s cardboard cans with alternative packaging solutions, identify advantages, and discuss how to further improve sustainability.

“For instance, if you’re searching for a packaging for a less delicate product like sweets or cereal, you can choose a non-aluminium lining and a cardboard bottom for your cardboard can”, said Cairns. The cardboard bottom is manufactured in the new DRECE (Deep Recessed Exposed Cut Edge) design. DRECE ends as well as Sonoco’s EcoSeal end are currently being tested by several Sonoco customers who are considering replacing their standard tin ends with cardboard.” For sensible products such as coffee or infant formula, Sonoco offers alternative solutions to aluminium linings such SiOx (silicone oxide) barriers. “We are working around the clock on sustainable options and testing new materials”, explains Cairns, “I am also proud to say that our In-Mould-Labelling (IML) solutions currently already achieve recyclability rates of up to 98 percent.”

Design and convenience are what win over consumers

The design of Sonoco’s FachPack booth is intended to highlight packaging solutions like the giveaway snack can. Consisting of a kitchen, a living room and a supermarket, it displays Sonoco’s cardboard and IML solutions in the settings where they win over consumers with their outstanding design and convenience features. IML solutions for yoghurt products, for example, provide visitors with a clear view of their contents, and can be found in the kitchen area. Snack cans demonstrate their reclosability and are waiting on the living room coffee table. Another type of innovative product on display: cardboard cans for spices and spice mixtures from the start-up justspices, which will feature prominently in the supermarket area of the booth. Other brands showcased include mymuesli, Emmi and Rügenwalder.
