  • Sonoco Introduces latest Paper Packaging Innovation with Fully Recyclable 95% Paper-Based Cans

Sonoco Introduces latest Paper Packaging Innovation with Fully Recyclable 95% Paper-Based Cans

The 95% paper-based can, a significant addition to the EnviroSense® portfolio.

Hockenheim, Germany – Sonoco has always been dedicated to enhancing the paper content in its packaging to optimise its recyclability. Most recently, they have contributed to the introduction of recyclable paper cans for Nestlé coffee products.

The new can-body has an innovative recyclable 95% paper-based version. This more sustainable solution replaces the conventional metal bottom with a fibre-based bottom, making the entire can-body fully recyclable across households in the UK and mainland Europe.

Moreover, the recyclable paper can-body not only offers practical benefits such as lightweight design for easy handling and transportation, but it also plays a crucial role in protecting the product while having the same level of high barrier properties as the traditional metal-end can. This innovative packaging solution is making a positive contribution to reducing packaging waste, and also provides the same level of durability and functionality as its traditional packaging.

More importantly though, is the new packaging’s recyclability. The new paper-can meets the UK’s packaging regulations and is recyclable in existing systems across the UK.

Seàn Cairns, President Global RPC at Sonoco: “We are proud to have contributed to this latest innovation in the coffee market – a new recyclable paper-end can with medium to high barrier properties. This solution reflects an important step towards more sustainable packaging.”

Sonoco has proudly introduced the 95% paper can, a significant addition to the EnviroSense® portfolio. This innovative packaging solution is designed with sustainability at its core, utilising 95% paper content to meet the growing demand for eco-friendly alternatives. Sonoco’s Paper Bottom Can range reflects our commitment to reducing environmental impact by offering packaging that is not only highly recyclable but also minimises the use of plastic. By integrating more paper into our cans, we are taking a substantial step toward supporting our customers’ sustainability goals and contributing to a more sustainable future.

“We hope that the success of this project will inspire other companies and brands to embrace more sustainable packaging solutions.”

  • Cristalco icing sugar brand in France, Daddy Sugar launches in Sonoco’s recyclable paper container

Cristalco icing sugar brand in France, Daddy Sugar launches in Sonoco’s recyclable paper container

One of France’s most iconic household brands in France is making a more sustainable switch

The popular French sugar brand has replaced its previous plastic container with a Sonoco cardboard container fitted with a PP sprinkler, making the pack fully recyclable.

With a goal of reducing the carbon footprint of its packaging, Cristalco re-think the design of its 500g Daddy Sugar icing sugar sprinkler container. Previously consisting of a polyethylene (PEHD) body completely covered by an oriented polystyrene (OPS) sleeve and a polypropylene (PP) lid, it was an obvious candidate for an eco-revamp.

After five years of work, six technical studies and multiple life cycle analyses to define the best concept and material choices, the Cristalco is launching a new cardboard packaging from Sonoco that contains 80% less plastic.

Supplied by Sonoco, the new cardboard container, with 68% of recycled fibre comes with a PE film innerliner to preserve the contents and limit sugar caking by protecting it from humidity. The PP lid (produced by Rovip) has two openings, one with six small holes for sprinkling, while the other has a wider opening for pastry-making.

Julie Moréac, Head of Packaging Development and Technical Support at Cristalco said:

“We’ve improved the sprinkler so that the icing sugar pours out better. We wanted the lid to be as eco-designed as possible, while still retaining its core functionalities. It needed to offer easy dispensing, opening and closing, and a tamper-evident seal. The lid, meanwhile, had to retain its shape and not “ovalise” despite us reducing the amount of material use to form it. These posed significant challenges to overcome. In addition, the lid is held in the can, without glue, to prevent potential contamination and to keep the amount of materials used to a minimum. The challenge here is securing the lid securely into the cardboard body, the diameter of which can change by as much as a few tenths of a millimetre.”

An 80% reduction in the use of virgin plastic

Sonoco responded to the challenge and the end result of the project is that Cristalco has now reduced the amount of virgin plastic in its primary packaging by 80% since 2019. This compares with a reduction of 64% just before the Sugar Daddy switch to rigid paper containers.

The new Sonoco rigid paper containers are available on supermarket shelves, under the both the “Daddy” and “Erstein” brands, from June 2024.

“We’re always delighted to help companies reach their sustainability goals by reducing non-recyclable materials in their packaging and helping them to find an alternative solution. We’re pleased to have been part of that solution for Cristalco and look forward to working with them into the future.”
