  • Pringles launches a new ‘designed for recycling’ paper-based tube

Pringles launches a new ‘designed for recycling’ paper-based tube

Now, one of the most iconic brands is making a more sustainable switch.

In a historic moment for the snacking industry, which reflects the world’s collective mission of acting and consuming more sustainably, Kellanova Europe has given its Pringles tube a more sustainable redesign.

Together with Sonoco, Kellanova Europe has redesigned its Pringles packaging to make it widely recyclable by replacing the metal bottom with a paper fibre-based bottom.

Earlier this year, Kellanova Europe’s Belgian engineering and R&D teams announced the official launch of the new ‘designed for recycling’ Pringles tube and introduced the new paper sealing technology on production lines in Mechelen Belgium. These specially designed machines once fully operational across all production lines will be able to produce more than 1 billion perfectly sealed recyclable Pringles tubes per year.

The original Pringles tube, which many households are familiar with, is iconic and “has been a defining feature of the product since it was launched in 1967 in the USA”, says Kellanova.

The new tube retains the brand’s iconic cylindrical shape – enabling the crisps to remain stacked. The shape and stacked nature of the crisps is part of the Pringles image and adds an element of fun for the consumer. Furthermore, the new paper-based tube protects the chips and preserves the flavour of the Pringles to help keep them as fresh as the day they were made. Consumers can also reclose the tubes with the recyclable plastic lid to ensure the chips stay fresh after opening.

Most importantly, the new paper-based tube takes into account “Circularity by Design” guidelines from the European fibre-based packaging value chain, the 4Evergreen alliance, and obtains a good recyclability score for its suitability for recycling in standard paper mills under 4evergreen’s Recyclability Evaluation Protocol. The tubes are accepted in recycling streams across Europe, as the new paper end makes it easier to recycle for paper recyclers. The launch follows Kellanova’s trial of a steel can in Italy in 2019 and a paper tube in the UK in 2020. The vast majority of the paper used for the old and new tube is made from recycled material, helping to boost the circular economy for recycled paper packaging.

The introduction of the recyclable Pringles tube is an important step towards Kellanova’s commitment of all its packaging being recyclable, reusable and compostable by 2030. Ultimately, the new paper-based Pringles tube sets an example for the food packaging industry while bolstering brand loyalty too.

Seàn Cairns, President – Global Rigid Paper and Closures (RPC) at Sonoco, worked with both companies’ technical teams, to develop the new ‘designed for recycling’ Pringles tube.  He notes that consumers are more aware than ever of how their purchasing behaviours are impacting the environment, as well as the more sustainable packaging options available to them. “With this in mind,” he says, “it’s important for businesses to stay ahead of the curve by exploring new packaging technologies and materials.”

Highlighting the importance of partnership in packaging design, he adds: “It was a pleasure working with Kellanova and we look forward to seeing how the new paper-based Pringles tube is received by the market. We hope the success of this project inspires other companies and brands to convert to more sustainable packaging.”

Sonoco has long been committed to increasing the paper content in its packaging to maximise its recyclability.  Sonoco has taken steps over the years to re-design its packaging and make it more sustainable. This process involved the company hugely investing in research and development to reduce or, where possible, completely remove the plastic and metal components of its packaging.

The result of this is Sonoco’s successful, rigid paper packaging lines as part of the EnviroSense® family including a range of paper containers such as GREENCAN® and EnviroStick™.

The new Pringles paper-based recyclable tubes are already available in Belgium, in the UK (initially available at UK Tesco and One Stop stores) and in the Netherlands with plans to scale up their launch across Europe.

  • Charting an Unconventional Career in Packaging: An Interview with Lauren Benford

Charting an Unconventional Career in Packaging: An Interview with Lauren Benford

What does the pathway to a packaging career look like? It’s sometimes unconventional.

We chatted with a Senior Field HR Generalist for Sonoco Europe, Lauren Benford, about her unconventional career path in packaging. Lauren shared her Sonoco experience and how she expanded her knowledge and skillset by answering these 10 questions:

What did you do before joining Sonoco?

I always wanted to be a police officer, so I attended college from 2009 to 2011 to earn a Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) national diploma in public services. However, the government made cuts during that period and decreased their recruitment efforts in the sector. I had to rethink my career path.

Alongside being at college, I worked at a fast-food chain as a sandwich artist and stayed on once my college course was completed. I enjoyed working there, but I did not feel that this position was my long-term career. I began my search for something new.

How did you hear about your starting role and when did you start at Sonoco?

My online search revealed a vacancy for a business administration apprenticeship at Sonoco Chesterfield in the UK. I applied for this internship. Sonoco VP of Finance for Global Rigid Paper Containers, Tim Nash, and Associate Director of Human Resources in Europe, Stacy Williams, interviewed me, and I started with Sonoco in April 2012. I have worked here for over 11 years now.

What was your first Sonoco role?

While full-time at the Chesterfield site, I also worked toward my National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) Level 2 apprenticeship on the job. My main duties were dealing with incoming and outgoing mail, managing the time and attendance system and indirectly ordering items, such as stationery, PPE and maintenance supplies.

What learning opportunities did Sonoco offer you when you first joined?

Throughout my career, Sonoco has given me so many opportunities for which I will always be very grateful. After completing my NVQ Level 2 in business administration, I went on to complete Level 3. By this time, I started to pick up some human resources tasks, since my manager Stacy worked in human resources. During this time, I began to take a real interest in this function. I took on payroll for both the Chesterfield and the former Manchester manufacturing site (called Stokes Street) and achieved my payroll technician certificate (CIPP) in 2015. I then went on to study human resources practice, gaining certifications in Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) Level 3 in 2017, CIPD Level 5 in 2018 and recently CIPD Level 7 in 2023.

I was promoted to HR Assistant in April 2017, then to HR Officer in July 2018 and most recently to Senior Field HR Generalist in November 2022. During this time, the Manchester production site was closed. From 2018, I started to fully support the Bradford and Chesterfield sites.

What career-advancing qualifications have you gained since joining Sonoco?

Sonoco provided other learning opportunities throughout my career. Beyond what I previously mentioned, I became a mental health first aider, assisted with different business functions and gained real insight into how the business operates. During my qualification courses, I fortunately gained great networking opportunities to share ideas and experiences with other HR professionals. My professional development has increased my confidence and knowledge, enabling me to do my role effectively and to the best of my ability.

What experience has been your favourite at Sonoco so far?

I have really enjoyed the opportunities to visit different Sonoco sites, meeting new people and experiencing differing cultures. I have visited several sites across the UK and in Hockenheim, Germany. These visits were a great experience to see how others work and share knowledge.

What motivates you in your current role?

My current role is Senior Field HR Generalist. When Sonoco goes through changes, I embrace it and work to make it work for our employees. My passion for employee engagement motivates me to get things right for our employees.

How did your most recent qualification progress your career?

I recently qualified for CIPD Level 7 in strategic people management. After finishing my CIPD Level 5, I was very concerned about being able to commit the time needed to complete my Level 7 qualification, but the time came to bite the bullet and go for it. I finished this two-year academic qualification while working full-time, filling every Thursday evening and many weekends in the process. I am really proud of achieving this qualification that is equivalent to a master’s degree.

After taking a short breather, I can now focus on new areas of learning, such as assisting the Chesterfield site as we begin our Sonoco Performance System (SPS) journey. This SPS process could offer career progression for me to be a people manager in the future.

What advice would you offer those considering an alternative path into a packaging career?

It is never too late to make a career change, so do what you want to do. As you know, I didn’t continue to university after completing my college course when I was younger. At times I wondered if I may regret that decision. Looking back, I would not change anything about my career. I have gained so much experience throughout my time with Sonoco, and I still have a lot to learn. Through hard work, my full-time role and the full support of Sonoco, I have achieved degree-level qualifications.

What is something fun you enjoy outside of work?

If you need a small wall built or a DIY job completed, I’m the person to call as I did bricklaying, joinery, painting and decorating as one of my GSCEs. When I am not walking my blue whippet, Opie, I am probably spending time with my fiancé Joe, who proposed to me during a holiday in Bruges last year. I’m currently looking forward to celebrating my completion of CIPD Level 7 at graduation.

Looking to the future, I anticipate continuing my education and reinforcing my learning in the manufacturing industry at this global packaging company.

  • Health-focused nutrition company OneDayMore successfully switches to Sonoco’s paper-based can

Health-focused nutrition company OneDayMore successfully switches to Sonoco’s paper-based can

The breakfast cereals firm aims for all of its packaging to be paper-based by 2024.

Hockenheim, Germany – Breakfast cereals manufacturer OneDayMore has successfully converted its packaging to a more sustainable solution, manufactured by Sonoco.

OneDayMore strives to help people take care of their health – and the planet – with its natural, nutritious, and easy-to-prepare breakfast products, including muesli, granola and porridge. The company said the next, obvious path for its development was a move towards more sustainable packaging – and Sonoco helped it to achieve this goal by converting its current packaging to Sonoco’s paper container with a paper-bottom.

Hoping to increase the uptake in recycling by end users, Wojciech Mlodawski, Procurement Director, at OneDayMore said: “We wanted to design our packaging in a way that used the most environmentally friendly raw materials possible, while also ensuring consumers have no doubts about recycling the packaging at home, once the cereal inside was consumed..”

Previously, OneDayMore was using Sonoco’s metal-end cans, but it has since added paper-bottomed cans to its packaging lines in 13 European markets – and it hopes to expand into more. Its end goal is to have converted all of its packaging to paper by the end of 2024.

Mateusz Kurij, Business Development Manager at Sonoco said: “Sonoco has a responsibility to adopt and maintain sustainable practices, allowing us to develop packaging solutions with minimal impact to the environment. We are proud to be part of OneDayMore’s journey to make its packaging easier to recycle and meet their sustainability goals.”
Mr Mlodawski recognises that consumers perceive the paper-bottom can as being a more eco-friendly packaging solution and the response to it having converted its packaging has been very positive.

Mr Mlodawski explains: “We had a great experience working with Sonoco during our packaging converting process. The company was very professional in terms of the product quality, delivery timings and customer service that it delivered. We also appreciated the flexible production timings and volumes, which allowed us to match our fluctuating production plans.”

Polish-based OneDayMore was founded in 2016 and has around 100 team members.

Sonoco to showcase its latest innovation and sustainable packaging solutions at Interpack 2023

Rigid paper containers, in-mould labelling, and industrial solutions will all feature on the Sonoco stand at Interpack 2023, as Sonoco presents the latest developments in its consumer and industrial protective solutions.

Hockenheim, Germany – On its stand (C34, Hall 9) at Interpack 2023, in Düsseldorf, Sonoco will exhibit its broad range of sustainable packaging solutions – from fibre-based and IML consumer products – to a range of tubes and cores and other industrial solutions.

Beyond its products, Sonoco will also be emphasising its track record as an effective partner to help packaging production companies and brands to meet both their environmental and their commercial goals.

Francesco Giannolo, Vice President and General Manager at Sonoco Consumer Products Europe, comments: “We are very excited to see our peers, customers and other stakeholders, face-to-face at Interpack 2023 – the first event of its kind since the pandemic.

“Visitors to our stand will not only see our full portfolio of consumer and industrial solutions in-person, but they will also find out how we can tailor our products to meet their business needs and sustainability goals too.”

From CO2 reduction to boosting shelf appeal and navigating complex regulation, Sonoco offers tailor-made solutions to brands, no matter what their converting journey looks like.

In light of this, Sonoco’s theme at Interpack 2023 is #destination…

    • #destinationreduceCO2 – Helping customers to be greener with sustainable packaging solutions.
    • #destinationallpaper – Increasing paper content in fibre-based packaging – making recycling easier.
    • #destinationshelfappeal – Guiding customers to sustainable, yet eye-catching packaging.

Sonoco will also use Interpack to announce that current Sonoco sub-companies – including Sonoco-Alcore, Conitex, Papertech and Skjern – will now collectively be recognised as Sonoco.

    Consumer

At Interpack, demonstrating its position as a leader in the sustainable packaging field, Sonoco will exhibit its packaging solutions – which not only have shelf appeal, but deliver on manufacturing efficiency and sustainability too.

    Rigid Paper Containers

Recyclable by design, Sonoco’s rigid paperboard can is made of up to 85% recycled material.

The can body is made with recycled fibre and the solution features a highly effective oxygen and moisture barrier layer, which assures food safety and preserves shelf-life, while ensuring that recycling is straight-forward through the household paper and cardboard stream.

The GREENCAN® recyclable paperboard package is made of 92-98% paperboard and features a wide range of barrier properties. Available in multiple shapes and sizes – from round, square or rectangular; to oval, oblong or triangular – it is the ultimate ‘all-paper’ can, providing a highly recyclable, mono-material packaging solution, with robust barrier properties.

GREENCAN® also features an integrated paper lid, so when empty, the whole package can go through the household paper recycling stream. This makes it simple and convenient for the consumer and for the whole recycling process.

Sonoco’s rigid paper containers have a lower weight and reduced environmental footprint than comparably sized metal cans or other rigid packaging types.

The ranges are suitable for the food and drink, beauty and pharma markets, and are already used by some of the most iconic global brands.

    ENVIROSTICK™

Made from recyclable fibre, the ENVIROSTICK™  lines was developed to meet cosmetics brands’ goals for recyclable packaging. The three-piece tube enables the product to be pushed up, while the exterior remains flexible for label design.

    Closures

Designed for use with rigid paper containers, Sonoco’s diverse portfolio of ends and closures is part of its end-to-end product offering for its customers.

In addition to showcasing its standard polypropylene lids and membranes at Interpack, Sonoco will also exhibit:

    • Multi-purpose membranes, which are part of Sonoco’s GREENCAN® portfolio
    • A prototype of the paper sprinkler and PS (polystyrene) free sprinkler
    • Paper over cap lids, which are already serving as an end-to-end, top-to-bottom all paper can solution for Sonoco’s customers
    • The Vegetop compostable sprinkler, produced by Vegeplast – a French company and partner of Sonoco, which specialises in manufacturing bio-sourced and biodegradable including sprinklers and lids.

    In-Mould Labelling

Sonoco is a specialist manufacturer of thin wall packaging featuring In-Mould Labelling (IML). It develops new solutions and invests in production lines to offer high quality, unique and bespoke IML products – many of which will be exhibited at Interpack 2023.

  • Sonoco Further Expands Position as a Sustainable Packaging Leader with EPPA Membership

Sonoco Further Expands Position as a Sustainable Packaging Leader with EPPA Membership

The membership supports Sonoco’s packaging initiatives in Europe, in particular, its engagement with the EU proposal for a Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

Hockenheim, Germany – Sonoco is pleased to announce that it has become a European Paper Packaging Alliance (EPPA) member as of January 2023.

Established in 2020 and headquartered in Brussels, Belgium (since Jan 2023), EPPA is a not-for-profit food and food service packaging association that works with European policymakers to find solutions to increase food packaging recyclability without compromising on health and safety.

The EPPA also serves as a voice of the industry for its 11 members, highlighting the advantages – such as increased shelf life and food safety – of fibre-based packaging that incorporates functional coatings and barriers.

Sonoco manufactures a wide variety of paper containers, some of which feature barrier properties. This is the type of packaging that EPPA advocates for, among others.

Sonoco looks forward to collaborating with other EPPA members to promote the value of recycling, as well as the use of poly-coated fibre-based packaging.

Francesco Giannolo, Vice President and General Manager of Sonoco’s European Rigid Paper Container division: “Our team is thrilled to be a member of the European Paper Packaging Alliance. Being a part of the Alliance will give us even more of a voice to facilitate positive change in the industry.

“Our customers will benefit from our membership because more stakeholders will learn about the benefits of poly-coated fibre-based packaging. Additionally, the EPPA is helping to better define legislation surrounding this type of packaging.”

Matti Rantanen, Director General at the EPPA, added: “We are delighted to welcome Sonoco as our newest Alliance member.

“Fibre-based packaging is an integral part of the modern European food economy and Sonoco has shown, with its paper containers and other innovations, that it is making a huge difference to the sustainable packaging market.”

Over the last few years, Sonoco has continued to focus on its sustainability credentials. In August 2022, it became a member of the European Organization for Packaging and the Environment (EUROPEN); in May 2021, it joined the Industry Council for Packaging & the Environment (INCPEN).

Sonoco’s rigid paper containers are used to package some of the world’s most iconic brands. Many of its most recent innovations (including a 2022 award winner) will be on display in Birmingham at the NEC in February.

The paperboard can body is made of at least 95% fibres with a minimum of 60% recycled content and features a highly effective oxygen and moisture barrier layer, which assures food safety and preserves shelf-life.

Sonoco’s GREENCAN® solution, a recyclable package made of 92-98% paperboard, with a wide range of barrier properties, will also feature on Sonoco’s stand. • New Chuck Technology Provides a Change in Paper and Board Winding and Unwinding Processes

New Chuck Technology Provides a Change in Paper and Board Winding and Unwinding Processes

ViPer Chucks™ offer significant process improvements during winding runs.

Brussels, EU – January 12, 2023 –Sonoco (NYSE: SON), a global leader in diversified packaging, developed a new chuck technology for winding and unwinding operations of paper and board manufacturers. The new technology offers significant runnability improvements for paper and board reels in the most demanding winding operations, especially in centre drum winders and special unwinding stands like sheeters as well as corrugators.

“To meet today’s challenges of paper and board manufacturers and to offer significant productivity improvements in a cost inflation environment, we developed a new generation of chucks exclusively with our partner,” said Markku Ronnila, Product Manager Paper Mill Cores in Europe. “Our new chuck technology is a step change in paper and board winding and eliminates typical problems such as vibration, torque transmission issues and chew-out. We called this innovative technology ViPer Chucks™ in reference to the improved VIbration PERformance.”

ViPer Chucks™ offer significant process improvements during winding runs, less vibration leading to reduced web-breaks or web-tension, overall faster winding speeds and reduced chew-out causing less abrasive dirt. Consequently, this avoids frequent chuck cleaning and saves employees’ working time. The chucks also provide better torque transmission for heavy reel weights. The result allows for higher productivity due to significantly reduced process interruptions coming along with an improvement on process safety. Existing chucks can be easily replaced in a plug-and-play solution.

Sonoco Further Expands Sonopost® Cornerpost Manufacturing with New Facility in Turkey

Brussels, EU – November 11, 2022 –Sonoco (NYSE: SON), a global leader in diversified packaging, plans to further expand Sonopost® cornerpost manufacturing in Europe. A new protective packaging production facility is set to open in Bursa, Turkey in November, one year after Sonoco established the first Sonopost® operation in Sochaczew, Poland.

“Growing demand for our proprietary Sonopost® technology created the need for a second production facility,” said Adam Wood, Vice President and General Manager of Global Paper Products in Europe. “Our protective packaging design team is working hard with our customers who are aligned with us in creating fully sustainable, paper-based packaging that protects and preserves both their product and our planet for generations to come.”

Sonopost® provides a sustainable way to protect white goods (e.g., washers, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers etc.), HVAC systems and heat pumps from manufacturing and/or shipment damage. Sonopost® help reduce EPS/Plastic packaging and aid in reduction of carbon footprint. In addition to sustainability, cornerposts add increased stackability and save on inventory space. Sonopost® are made from 100% recycled paperboard sourced from Sonoco mills. They can go back into the paper stream after use, allowing manufacturers to reduce or eliminate their EPS/Plastic packaging waste. Cornerposts act as an external skeleton for large singular units, bracing and supporting bulk loads and securing them into tight units.

Sonopost® production at the new plant in Turkey is expected to start in the fourth quarter 2022 and increase production in order to meet the growing demand for EPS free packaging. New Sonoco Bursa Protective facility will also hold a design and testing lab to assist our customers in packaging design process.
