New Chuck Technology Provides a Change in Paper and Board Winding and Unwinding Processes

ViPer Chucks™ offer significant process improvements during winding runs.

Brussels, EU – January 12, 2023 –Sonoco (NYSE: SON), a global leader in diversified packaging, developed a new chuck technology for winding and unwinding operations of paper and board manufacturers. The new technology offers significant runnability improvements for paper and board reels in the most demanding winding operations, especially in centre drum winders and special unwinding stands like sheeters as well as corrugators.

“To meet today’s challenges of paper and board manufacturers and to offer significant productivity improvements in a cost inflation environment, we developed a new generation of chucks exclusively with our partner,” said Markku Ronnila, Product Manager Paper Mill Cores in Europe. “Our new chuck technology is a step change in paper and board winding and eliminates typical problems such as vibration, torque transmission issues and chew-out. We called this innovative technology ViPer Chucks™ in reference to the improved VIbration PERformance.”

ViPer Chucks™ offer significant process improvements during winding runs, less vibration leading to reduced web-breaks or web-tension, overall faster winding speeds and reduced chew-out causing less abrasive dirt. Consequently, this avoids frequent chuck cleaning and saves employees’ working time. The chucks also provide better torque transmission for heavy reel weights. The result allows for higher productivity due to significantly reduced process interruptions coming along with an improvement on process safety. Existing chucks can be easily replaced in a plug-and-play solution.

Sonoco Further Expands Sonopost® Cornerpost Manufacturing with New Facility in Turkey

Brussels, EU – November 11, 2022 –Sonoco (NYSE: SON), a global leader in diversified packaging, plans to further expand Sonopost® cornerpost manufacturing in Europe. A new protective packaging production facility is set to open in Bursa, Turkey in November, one year after Sonoco established the first Sonopost® operation in Sochaczew, Poland.

“Growing demand for our proprietary Sonopost® technology created the need for a second production facility,” said Adam Wood, Vice President and General Manager of Global Paper Products in Europe. “Our protective packaging design team is working hard with our customers who are aligned with us in creating fully sustainable, paper-based packaging that protects and preserves both their product and our planet for generations to come.”

Sonopost® provides a sustainable way to protect white goods (e.g., washers, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers etc.), HVAC systems and heat pumps from manufacturing and/or shipment damage. Sonopost® help reduce EPS/Plastic packaging and aid in reduction of carbon footprint. In addition to sustainability, cornerposts add increased stackability and save on inventory space. Sonopost® are made from 100% recycled paperboard sourced from Sonoco mills. They can go back into the paper stream after use, allowing manufacturers to reduce or eliminate their EPS/Plastic packaging waste. Cornerposts act as an external skeleton for large singular units, bracing and supporting bulk loads and securing them into tight units.

Sonopost® production at the new plant in Turkey is expected to start in the fourth quarter 2022 and increase production in order to meet the growing demand for EPS free packaging. New Sonoco Bursa Protective facility will also hold a design and testing lab to assist our customers in packaging design process.

Sonoco gears up for summer rollout of recyclable Sonopost® technology in Europe

Sonoco Protective Solutions, a division of global packaging and sustainability leader Sonoco (NYSE: SON), today announced the expansion of its proprietary Sonopost® packaging technology into Europe. Utilizing current manufacturing infrastructure, strategically located to support this growing opportunity, Sonoco Protective Solutions will expand with a new Sonopost manufacturing operation in Sochaczew, Poland this summer.

The Sonopost manufacturing platform uses corner posts made from 100% recycled paperboard to provide a more sustainable packaging solution for large appliances, HVAC units and similar products requiring superior unit protection and exceptional stacking capability. After use, the 100% recyclable corner posts can be bailed with existing paper scrap and recycled in the paper stream, allowing manufacturers to reduce or completely eliminate their plastic packaging waste.

“European manufacturing and retailers are aggressively looking for proven solutions to address mandates related to sustainability,” said Adam Wood, Vice President and General Manager Paper/Industrial Converted Products Europe.  “With industry leading Sonopost technology, we have the privilege of helping European manufacturers make significant progress toward their sustainability goals.”

Long, hollow tubes of solid paperboard shaped into special profiles to hug corners and protect edges, Sonopost corner posts offer industry leading stacking strength, dynamic crush-resistance, and superior unit protection. Acting as an internal skeleton, the technology allows manufacturers to confidently package and stack their products without the burden of plastic-based packaging materials. The corner posts also serve as an external skeleton, bracing and supporting bulk loads and securing them into tight units.

According to Wood, the new Sonopost plant in Poland will open its doors in the July-August timeframe. More information regarding the plant opening will be available in the coming months.
